GRX 10 speed chainset with 11 speed chain

Sorry, am aware I did a very similar post to this recently but I need a 170mm GRX chainset to finish off CX bike (has to be GRX as I already have Garbaruk chainrings to suit). The only GRX600 chainsets available are 10 speed, and I don't want to spend GRX810 money.

General consensus is that 11 speed chain works fine on 10 speed chainrings, but I'm very suspicious of modern Shimano and in particular GRX. Has anyone tried this combo?

Ta

Not that combo specifically but I use Shimano (and kmc and SRAM) 11 speed chains on Shimano 10 speed rings (34/50), FSA 10 speed chainrings (36/46), and stronglight 10 speed chain rings (34/42) with no issues at all.

I have a single ring GRX 600 crank and the rest is 11 speed on my GT grade it works fine.

I guess since you're putting Garbaruk rings on it you're worried about the spacing between rings?

FWIW I've got ultegra 11 running OK on a 9 speed xt triple crank and rings.

It's not brilliant but nor is it terrible. I can't see the 10 speed being anything other than absolutely fine.

No, it's a very silly set of circumstances, but I now have two part worn Garbaruk narrow wide oval rings, each with a corresponding part worn chain + cassette, so am going 1x with the new chainset. Only reason I'm buying a 2x chainset is that the Garbaruk rings are offset to work with 2x, so I can't buy a 1x chainset as it would just be a waste of my existing kit 🙄

The 11 speed compatibility is for the (now spare) rings that I'll take off the new chainset and possibly use on my 2x11 gravel bike, as this will give me two sets of rings for the gravel bike, 48/31 and 46/30.

Stainypants for the win though, thanks!

I’m running GRX 10 speed front double with GRX 400 10 speed front mech, 11 speed chain, 11 speed rear cassette and 11 speed 105 rear mech. 11 speed Ultegra hydro shifters. Works perfectly

Will be fine. 10-12 speed chains only differ in outer width - inner (and cog tooth) width is the same. I've run a 10sp Ultegra chainset on an 11 speed no problem, and even more 1x combos. If you've got an MTB 1x you could use that with 5 mm spacers - I've got a 12sp SLX crank on my 11sp SRAM Force 1x setup right now.
