Hi All,
I have a Chrimbo do to attend in Windermere on Saturday and am going to take the bike with me and head for Grizedale in the morning. Having looked at the map I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations on routes back to Windermere? I was thinking of taking the ferry across the lake.
Any suggestions welcome.
Cheers
Davie
Check that the ferry is actually running! IIRC, it stops in winter...
I've used the ferry a few times, it's about £1 for bikes I think.
Edit: yes, it is running, just looked at the timetable
Ferry is dead easy and cheap.
It's a straight forward ride to Grizedale from the ferry. The green dotted route (other route with public access) from Esthwaite is pretty good.
if you don't mind a bit of a trek, you could go Via Consiton and head back on the marked cyclepath from there.
Grizedale Fox descent to ESTHWAITE, upto Sawrey and drop down to the ferry, easy peasy. Even better in a foot of snow.
I'd check the weather. If this wind keeps up i doubt the ferry will be running. Claife Heights is alright for a ride. just take the left at the phone box about 100 yards passed the Sawrey Inn. Theres an ace bit of down hill which comes out near the Ferry crossing.

Heading out of grizedale you need to be on the fox bridleway. at the bottom turn right up the road climb. as you start descending on the road, look out for a fire track on your left. climb over the gate, and ride up the track until you see a bridleway on your left. this is hole in the wall! When you reach the road go left, till you get to esthwaite water. turn right and head for sawrey. just past the sawrey arms, turn left on bridleway, short climb, and superb descent to finish on. at the bottom of the bridleway, turn right and head for ferry. This is the best way to get from grizedale to windermere, its a great end to a ride.
