I've never really used the GPS when riding and it's been sat in the cupboard for a couple of years. Anyway, I decided that it would be useful as a training aid and could be used with Endomondo, so far so good.
I installed Mapsource from the original disc without problems.
Then came to the first problem, no serial port on the laptop, no worries, 25,00€ later have an adapter for serial to USB, and away we go.
Or not! Map source doesn't recognise the GPS (Garmin etrex venture), which is the GPS which came with the software. Nothing can have changed, or can it?
Is there something I can do so that the GPS will be recognised by the software?
Clicking te "looking for device" button draws a blank!!!
Thanks.
Download the new version of mapsource - might help?

Try that first?
I doubt that device manager will show it given its a serial device.
Maybe also email Garmin? BTW what GPS have you got?

It's got Garmin etrex venture written on it, and it's green if that helps. 😳
Has the device driver for the serial port installed correctly?
It should create an additional COM port - "look" for your Garmin on this COM port.
What transfer protocol is your GPS set up for (Garmin or NMEA)?
Is Mapsource set up the same?

[Homer Simpson] Errrrr, it's green![/Homer Simpson]
I'll have a look when I get back from my ride.... thanks.
Drudh is correct - Its very critical what mapsource serial device are setup (I used to have an extrex Legend serial) - I think you might need to read the manual 🙂
i had a similar problem with my Gramin Edge and an old version of Memory Map.
Have a look at this http://www.gpsbabel.org/
its a free download and works a dream.
The new version of Map Source worked, well sort of.
After getting to the point of finding device, with the latest Map Source I can see the handset has been found..... Then the (new) problem, the screen goes blue with a warning of dramatc failure of Windows and that's it.
I'll havea look at the gpsbabel site.
Thanks
Hmm I wonder if it is the USB to Serial cable driver that is causing a blue screen of death - I wonder if you will have the same issue with GPSbabel?
Have you downloaded and installed the latest USB/Serial cable driver?
OMG! If I was confused by Druids posts I'm totally baffled by GPSBabel, the help page has completely lost me. 😥
