Thinking of getting a (secondhand) Garmin 800 for cycling and walking. Anything better or more suitable ? Not had one before, so any constructive advice or owner experiences appreciated.

No need for secondhand at the moment;

just be mindful there are no maps included with that garmin on amazon. the base maps from garmin are about as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Open street maps can be used but I just like an OS map because it looks pretty. you can buy OS maps afterwards but they are very expensive if not bought up front with the device. factor in another £80 quid for ones with maps

Great response so far. Very tempted at the Amazon offer if I can get decent maps for the right price 🙂

are they legal? to buy from legitimate sources would cost far more... this thread is also duplicated..

I run Viewranger on a stripped back Samsung Galaxy. Cheap OS maps, accuracy is good and it didn't cost my anything at the end of the day. It also comes with something called "BuddyBeacon" which allows the wife to track me, in case of emergencies, from the comfort of home when she's not with me.............

Garmin Dakota 650 gives you the same as 800 but with lot more useable screen. Use both, 800 fine for road but I like the 650 screen for off road and walking. OS maps for UK are the best.
