I know, right? Too exciting.
So, I'm running 32mm GP5000 TR S set up tubeless. To be fair I have ridden them down some inappropriate tracks and stuff but even when not I'm finding them a bit puncture prone, compared to older model 30mm. Might just have been unlucky but the rear now has three Dynaplugs in, one of which failed doing around 70kph a few days back. Was a bit lively but all in a straight line so could have been worse.
Two questions, anyone else had Dynaplug issues? I'm sure they are supposed to be permanent repairs, but this has made me lose faith a bit
Second one is recommendations for something a bit more durable without losing too much performance. Schwalbe Ones (not Pro) mebbe?
Cheers like!
I’m pretty impressed with some Corsa Pro that I’m running on my Aethos. Whereas the GP5000STR have various cuts in (not enough to puncture but they’re new ish. My last set became very puncture prone well before they were worn down to the wear indicator limit) the Corsa Pro don’t even have any cuts and I ride the same roads. I’m not sure the Corsas are quite as fast rolling but I’m probably imagining that.
I went from STRs to ASTRs and they definitely have better puncture resistance but are a bit slower. Im now on Pirelli PZero TLR which are as tough as ASTRs but in my opinion feel better and are a bit quicker. Bicycle Rolling Resistance is a good source of comparison data
Just replaced my Pro One on the front and GP5000STR on the rear with two new STRs as the Dynaplug bungs were starting to fail after a year. A couple of front and back bungs were leaking and resealing intermittently and the tyres would drop to 40psi when it happened. I guess I could have repaired properly with mushrooms to squeeze out some more miles but some shiny new tyres in a box have been sat there all winter and the sun is shining (or was...).
The rear went on easily and sealed with just a track pump, front needed a bit more persuasion with an airshot. Looking forward to heading out tomorrow.
I would mushroom plug from the inside a road tyre that has needed a plug....although I have now given up on road tubeless.
I ran gp5000s on my gravel bike last year as I had a few long road races. They are amazing but they were puncture prone.. To be honest I took them down some trails that were more appropriate for full on gravel tyres so I probably shouldn't have been surprised
When I got my new road bike I purchased the gp5000 as versions and whilst I haven't taken that bike off road / on gravel I haven't had a puncture yet. They feel just as fast but so far no punctures
Quite a few years ago now, early days of road tubeless, I had a Dynaplug fail on a Schwalbe Pro One tyre (either 28c or 30c, can't remember), I just think it's an issue with using tubeless on tyres that narrow. I was on a LEJOG at the time, got a slow puncture which the sealant mostly dealt with and then a couple of days later when it was going down more quickly, I plugged it. That lasted about 3 days.
The final 2 days of the ride, I did on a tubed rear with no issues.
I think on road tyres, it would really benefit from a mushroom patch internally, tubeless itself is really more a preventative thing against rapid deflation that you can get with a tube.
Cheers all. Took the tyre off and it had 5 dynaplugs in it! So pretty much toast, and expensive toast on both counts. I've also taken it down some unsuitable tracks, mainly unwittingly when riding rural Thanet lanes, don't know the area but having been working away there a fair bit.
Tyres have only done 2k km so have ordered a.32mm GP5000AS TR which should near enough match the front visually at least. Might look at the Pirellis next time round
