Has anybody looked at these in the flesh ? Seem aimed at runners or road riding ie no back pack.

I've used one. They're very breathable. Slightly odd aesthetics - looks like the jacket is inside out - and not recommended for use with packs. The permanent beading stuff seems to permanently bead - I guess that depends on how you measure 'permanently', but it survived a couple of weeks of regular use for a mix of running and on a cross bike.
I wouldn't want to crash in it and I suspect an abrasive pack strap wouldn't play well with it though a smoother fabric might work unless grit got between strap and jacket. I wouldn't wear one for mountain biking, you also need to wear a top notch wicking baselayer for it to work properly and even then, you can still out-sweat it if you run hot.
Breathability is very good, but it's not magic...
