[Closed] Good LBS in W.Yorkshire?

[#3947885]

Last time I stripped and rebuilt a bike, I was a young bike mechanic myself and aheadsets were freaky (but brilliant) new technology... and I lived in Devon (and my mate's disc brake was front wheel only and the size of a dinner plate)

Hence, I need a good LBS to look after my new steed - can anyone support advice of a good BS for servicing with EXPERIENCED mechanics & sensible prices? More than happy to travel within 40 miles of Leeds for the right place.

Thank you. Rich

I've used Chevin cycles in Otley a few times for jobs I don't feel able to do myself. I don't think they're cheap but they do seem to be very competent.

Don't know where you are but I happily travel 12 miles to give business to Barry Firth (firth cycles - Queensbury) when I have 4 well known and established LBS closer.

I build and service my own bikes etc but for anything that requires specialist tools always take the bike there. He is also an excellent wheel builder

Sowerby Brothers in Mirfield (Huddersfield) do really good wheel builds, they put me some flows and pro 2s together and they're rock solid.

JD cycles in Ilkley seem to be a nice bunch and offer very good service. Chevin Cycles in Otley seem ok too.

Learn and do it yourself. Would you trust a weed smoking, half interested with your health. Plus if anything happens in the middle of the trail wouldnt it be great to fix or botch a repair yourself.

JD cycles gets my vote in Bradford (not actually Leeds)

Ilkley is LS29 , Bradford council own the moor but Ilkley itself has a Leeds postcode.

I've heard good things about JD's though.

Sligh hi-jack, but do any of these shops do a 'book your bike in' system?
VS cycles is my local shop, but if I take my bike in for a job that I know will take them at the most 15 minutes (they've got the specific tools which I don't. eg. wheel truing), they always say it will be ready in 5-7 days. I appreciate that there is a queue of bikes in front of me, but why can't they operate a system like a garage? Ie. "bring it in on Tuesday, it'll be ready to pick up that evening"? That would mean for non-urgent jobs you could carry on riding your bike.

By the way for bigger jobs I'll take my bike to Sowerby Brothers in Mirfield, I have more confidence in their abilities

JD cycles in Ilkley have done just that for me on a couple of occasions. I'm another vote for them.

Chevin cycles also do it but they're massively unfriendly And quite expensive in my experience.

JD Cycles have done me many favours and quick turnaround jubs in the past and i cannot praise them enough. Woodrups OK, were very road oriented when i lived up the road from them (four years ago), but friendly and affordable, needed chasing sometimes when stuff was on order. Not used cross trax but hear good things. Boneshakers in Harrogate have exceptionally good CS.

I'll chuck Blazing Saddles in Hebden into the mix and also Pedal Sport at King Cross in Halifax who are also excellent.

I wasn't impressed with Crosstrax when I last used them. They serviced my bike and then on my next ride the gear changed crunched and then sheared my rear mech, breaking 2 spokes and resulting in me having to buy new chain, cassette, rear mech and mech hanger and fix the rear wheel. Luckily I was only 3miles from the start of the ride.

There is a mobile bike mechanic in Leeds called Andy (Bike Doctor), he's a really nice guy and does a good job at sensible prices. Contact details here.
I was gonna get him top build a bike for me last year. He said he could collect the parts and do it for me OR he would do it with me to show how it's done. I ended up buying a full bike but I wouldn't hesitate to use him again.

A service, no matter how poor is unlikely to cause that. Poor shifting or riding is more likely.

I settled with Garage Bikes and wheeled in my new (old) purchase for a front fork diagnosis & all round fettle - seems like a genuinely good guy & bewilderingly knowledgable!

Got the impression he takes a genuine interest and tries hard; just what you'd want from an LBS. You know, the kind of place that would make you also buy kit there rather than faceless 'net purchases.

(Nice touch with a price list up on the wall too)

Thanks for all suggestions again.

JD cycles now has a new owner and is trying to build up the business a bit not heard a bad thing about them. original guy now runs from Gargrave and focuses on tandems I think.
