How dare people try and go faster down a hill that other people! It isn't a race you know!
Oh..hold on...
Will they be using disc brakes to slow down...
or not slow down
It's a bit gimmicky. Not sure it'll add anything to the race.
eh ? why not just have a downhill time trial. ๐
that way the fans could congregate on the most dangerous [s]dutch[/s] suicide corner! ๐
maybe some other classifications, most bidons carried at one time, most time on the front, most time on the back, most crashes, highest overall cadence, lowest overall cadence, most power output on a stage most power output over the whole race. etc.... ๐
Livin' it up when I'm goin' down
Lovin' it up till I hit the ground
Depends where the segments are situated and the state of the run-off in case of the worst. There should not be a repeat of this.
It's certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons, lots of negative comments from riders and fans. I'm not sure it makes things any worse, there's always been riders making moves on descents and pushing their luck.
Throttle works both ways.
Hmm descending the Stelvio. Yes please! Both sides are great descent although I wouldn't fancy a segment through the tunnels on the Bornio side.
Doesn't really matter now anyway, they've binned the idea
Tricky one. There will always be those who push the boundaries of what a bike can do for results.
Sagan's descending in the TDF a year or two back where he was pushing so hard, his weight so far forward for cornering grip that he could have licked the front tyre and Froome's break last year.
My instinct is this won't be a prize for someone in the peloton but for breakaway riders and probably a climber who can descend well.
I suspect the nature of elite riders is that if there is a prize on offer a few will chase it because it's there.
The riders' views are very relevant here and they are as entitled as any of us to say that there is something in their work environment that they feel is a disproportionate risk to their health and wellbeing.
It's easy for us to say "if you don't like it then take up cricket" but none, or very few, of us have experienced the pressure of riding in a pro team to make a living and pay the mortgage.
Doesn't really matter now anyway, they've binned the idea
Where are you seeing that? It's not on cycling news or the Giro page. Not that it would surprise me.
Sorry, not official yet but the UCI are asking for it to go: https://cyclingtips.com/2017/05/uci-asks-giro-organisers-drop-controversial-descending-competition/
Cheers.
