...for use with normal tyres/rim strip; are they much of a muchness or are some brands better than others?

Stan's is the best in my experience (latex + particles/bits).
JRA wheel milk (latex) doesn't have the particles in it that stan's does so it doesn't seal as well and it drys up quicker.
Bonty super juice and slime don't dry up, but that means they don't always seal holes properly either as they rely totally on the bits in them.
