Chain and rear wheel on my (old style) cotic soul are knackered so perfect opportunity to catch up with modern life a bit and go 1 by. We are off to Spain in 6 days for a biking holiday. Polisherman is too busy polishing in his shed to help, so advice needed urgently! My bottom bracket is 73mm and rear hub is 142mm (I think). Do I need to be worried about my chain line with the new set-up? Will I be able to use my existing cranks? Will my medium gauge rear mech cope with the huge cassette? Help.........!

No. Yes. Possibly not.

Are you just planning to stick a narrow-wide ring on the front and a big cassette on the back, and then bin the front mech and shifter?

Thanks for the replies chiefgrooveguru and Junkyard. I've heard mention of a longer tension screw that could increase the range of the rear mech. Do you know anything about this?

Throw up the spec of the mech and we’ll check.

Although I’m sure Shimano rate their mechs as whatever the biggest cassette they sold at the time was. I seem to remeber the unchanged M8000 mech was 42t until they made a 46t now it’s 46t.

What rear mech do you have and what size cassette do you intend fitting?

Whilst we're at it, what are the sizes of the current chainrings and cassette?

If you do go 11 speed the SRAM GX 11 speed shifter and mech have a good reputation. The Shimano M8000 is also good.

Done, order completed! Thanks for all your help. Really liked the look of the sram GX eagle 12 speed but could only find XG in stock - 🙁 Ended up with shimano slx 11 speed 11/42 with a 30 on the front. Won't be able to get much speed up on fast easy downs and will have to work a bit harder going up. I hope I've made the right decision! 😕

You could stick an oval chainring on the front. Makes the ups feel a bit easier and you might even manage 32t which will help with the downs.

PS don't know if you're sticking with your crankset, but SLX single cranksets are in the CRC clearance at the moment. 👿

Is he polishing his helmet ready for the (biking) holiday?
