Hi,
Anyone done GT and Inners on a rigid carbon forked 29er hardtail ?
Have ridden it on a 6" FS bike but is it possible rigid ?
not a 29er but have ridden them both many times on a rigid ss 26"
Italspark rode the Ho Chi Minh trail on a cross bike. A couple of weeks ago on ice. 29er should be easy enough.
It's perfectly POSSIBLE.... Just slow.
wasn't so much the 29er bit, more the fact of doing the trails with NO suspension other than the flex in the carbon legs and steel frame !
From memory, some on the routes NEED suspension - or am I just being a girl ๐
I'm sure it's possible - I weigh 16 stone though and there's no way I would do some of those drops at Inners on a rigid carbon fork.
It's doable on a rigid and the climbs will be easier but the downhills won't be as much fun.
Do you like climbing over going downhill?
Nothing needs suspension. My arms and legs have more travel than any bike.
I would have suggested that the climbs are also more difficult on a fully rigid bike than one with a decent suspension fork or rear suspension to be honest. Otherwise XC racers probably would still ride rigid bikes ๐
is it possible????
tress is fine rigid, not tried inners but i imagine it'd also be fun
Me and a mate, whilst riding rigid, have beaten people on meta 5.5s from the top of Minch Moor to the car park. It's not about the bike... ๐
Did they eat lots of dust?
Perhaps. ๐
it's not possible without at least 6" of travel, not even worth trying
Don't do it! I'd wait until this snowy stuff clears too ๐
Gunna give it a go I reckon, might be a few twitchy ring moments but hey, its about the riding eh ๐
can't saywe didn't warn him, you'll be driving up to buzzards nest though surely?
get ****en on with it !
I can (just about) do it on a hardtail - and I'm really really rubbish. therefore, if you are better than rubbish you should manage on a rigid no bother ๐
GT black is possible on a rigid, nothing too technical, but steel forks on a stiff (read, really, really harsh) magnesium frame and 1.8" tyres made it really painful on hands and wrists. Very fast on the smooth bits but anything where there was vibration was horrid, had to keep stopping to get circulation going again. Fitting of foam grips helped a bit, bigger tyres helped more.
**** me, a bmx could do GT any route now, inners is a whole new case though.
Grumpy Stevo an I rode a snowy GT last Sunday on rigid SS 29ers. Worst bits are riding the braking bumps created by wooses on 6 inch sussers ๐
Yes, rode all last year on a rigid 29er. Raced at Inners on it as well, just meant I was a bit slower than I'd have liked on the downs. Climbed great though.
Of course you can ride it, just as per any ride on a rigid you'll get shaken up a bit more. I keep meaning to take my cross bike round for a laugh.
oh ffs!... its a trail centre, ride it on a 8" travel freeride rig, a penny farthing, and anything in between, a berm's a berm...
Just had a year off from this site - now I remember why!!
Most of you are t@ssers who need to get out and ride - don't worry about what bike to choose just do it FFS!
did it all the time (black routes at GT) no bother at all, a couple of years back. since shifted back to the darkside of 26" wheels....... ๐
hahahahaha
wait, you're serious. let me laugh harder HAHAHAHA
nah, just kidding. but really, if you've ridden there before, surely you'll know if you can handle it on a different bike?
i rode the full red at gt last year on a full rigid haro mary 29r, but with nine gears..............not bad for a fat lad..... ๐
Best troll all evening.
Mountainbiking ain't meant to be easy. If it was we would ditch the mountain part and swap "biking" with "sofa sitting" but it would simply not be the same. The harder it is the more fun it is.
cyclelife - To**er !

*pops out to garage to check well-polished bikes are clean*
*returns to post on here*
Charlie - what sort of madness are you talking about? Riding a bike? Well I never.
bit of a late response here but I've been trying to load this page since last night. Decided to bin my 10Mb broadband in favour of an old 9.6k modem - this dial up malarky is where it's at.
Anyway, give me a shout when you're heading to GT, my carbon fibre unicycle could do with a wee jaunt.
Pretty much all of it is doable on a cyclocross bike - sure it's a fair bit slower in places but it's still riding a bike and so long as you're having fun...
cyclelife lost that sense of humour while you were away or the ability to see through the lines at the underlying irony? oh, both i see
Why wouldn't it be possible? Before full bounce (or even front suspension) we rode all over the place on rigids...so unless you have fallen in to the trap of believing the marketing, why wouldn't it be possible to ride? Your riding style/technique/line choice may need to change to take into account the lack of travel but MTFU and go do it...
Done both on rigid 26"
DickBarton, have you fallen for the marketing trap that says cars are better than horses for getting places on roads?

Nothing to do with better or worse. Sure, cars are more efficient most of the time but both do basically the same job.
Same with bikes - you can get round Glentress and Innerleithen on a full rigid without too many problems. Some parts will be slower, you may ache a bit more afterwards but it's doable and to some people that's the fun of it.
Pfftt. I ride down The Beast in derbushire on a SS CX bike. Any trail centre is do-able on any bike. I also took the CX bike to CYB and did the MBR, and also did Penmachno on it. All of which was great fun!
Dark Peak on a fully rigid 21" Emmelle Cortina with plastic cantilever brakes, no problem. (I normally ride a 16"!!! - didn't know any better at 12 years old.
Calderdale on a fully rigid steel bike many times.
Pennine bridleway on my road bike with 23mm slicks on ice.
Anythngs possible on pretty much any bike (not sure about dirt jumps on a recumbent but I am pretty sure someone will now post a pic of some loon trying exactly that)
Ye gads, what a bunch of morons.
Ride what you like, but riding a rigid bike with funny wheels then shouting about it on t'internets does not make you more attractive to girls.
Everyone knows you can't ride GT without a fullfacer, pressure suit and pads all over the place.
