Is it possible (or wise) to do the Glen Tilt loop (the one in Kenny Wilson's book) from the Linn of Dee end in a single day? Looks like it would add about 25km to the trip. How long would it take for a fit rider?
It would make for a very long day out IMO The glen tilt circuit took me around 6.5 7 hrs last time I did it ( disctinctly mediocre rider) and on the extra bit while the double track is good to white bridge and ridable to the end the single track bit would be fairly hard going IIRC The river crossing is a wade as well again IIRC.
Possible but you have better be fit and prepared for a long day out and be good on the eroded singletrack
Agree with the 6-7 hrs for the Tilt circuit - we always clock up about that time with a reasonable group - tho if you are fit under 5 should be possible (assuming you manage not to get lost on the N side of Shinagag were the route is at its most vague.)
I have done from Geldie into Tilt and IIRC it was superb going south and fairly good riding (though some in our party did not like the exposure along Allt Garbh in bits)Its likely to be a bit of a sapping way to finish going back at the end of the day. Would have thought you should allow an extra 2-3 hours on the time for the Tilt circuit(unless erosion has done for the Allt Garbh singletrack since I was last there
I think doing it from the Linn of Dee would add on a couple of hours to the route - maybe an hour each way. It would be an excellent extension though as riding the typical route anti clockwise from Blair Atholl means you end up with 10 miles down the Glen usually into a strong breeze on double track. It just feels a little anti-climatic to me, despite some excellent riding beforehand. Plus you'd get to ride the singletrack in Glen Tilt which is great fun in either direction.
I did used to do the standard route in under 4 hrs but that was a) when I was fitter and b) on my won (so less faff!)
Enjoy.
