Just thought I'd mention that the 3 chaps in the MBR article referred to by the OP are friends of mine, and fine fellas indeed.

And also that I'd have been in it too, were it not for work commitments that day.

They enjoyed themselves, but there was a lot of riding over the same lines while the photog waited for sunlight.

Just thought I'd mention it.

Y'know.

I still miss the riding in Mugdock with GMBC, even though I've not ridden north of the Peak District for 12 years! I was lucky to live 2 miles away so used to know it very well.
Never had any real trouble, but I have to say, riding along a canal around midnight in a city isn't the smartest thing to be doing. Keep your wits about you and you won't get much grief.

I really must come out a wee ride with GMTB'ers to see Mugdock- did one trail maintenance day there with you and it looked like there were some nice bits..
Meetup too- I'm not choosy!

Any time I've been up the braes it's been fairly safe. You'll get some hanging about but generally fairly harmless. Have yer wits about ye during peak bevvy times though, there is potential for getting done in round about that time but still fairly unlikely, you'll hear them before you see them.

I grew up in spittal so know all about the castlemilk teams, any violence is usually between young teams, people getting attacked if they are an unknown face in an area at the wrong time(bevvy time), or generally about unpaid tick bills.

In mugdock, the only wee guys I see are at the bombhole as you are entering the park, generally they just egg ye on to go down it and are fairly impressed when ye make it. But come on it's the milngavie young team we're talking about here!

Mugdock and Pollock park are fine, if you like the smell of freshly cut grass, poofs point is the place 😀

IRC Indeed Glasgow has a high murder rate, but dig a little further into that and check out who the normal targets and perps are and you'll see that the mountainbikers in parks are not exactly prime targets

This. I live in Maryhill, not exactly one of the best areas, but I still feel perfectly safe. The violence is almost all gang stuff, either wee kids, or older drug gangs. It almost never involves innocent bystanders.

For example, last year there was a bloke murdered about 100 yards from where I'm sitting now. It started as a fight between two young lads, who then phoned their dads, who both came tooled up with Samurai swords...

Whilst MTBing along the kelvin past acre one day I bumped into a Ned carrying a sawn off shotgun, I could shot you he said, go ahead said I, life is shite anyway, this impressed him somewhat and he didnt shot me, result.
Glasgows fine unless yer a wide boy...

I'm giving Mugdock a miss this weekend I think - trails are flooded, saturated, soggy and falling to bits with overuse. It's periods like this where trail centres become very attractive 😆

The riding that is accessible within an hour from Glasgow wipes the floor with anything that is within an hour of Edinburgh.

Glasgow is a great place to live if you ride a mtb.

Zedsdead - the only things really rideable with any fun in the Mugdock area are the West Highland Way paths - Dumgoyne Loop is fine if you know where it is ? Up the Westie, over to the distillery, up onto the old water board road to Strathblane etc. There will likley be a GMBC local ride on Sunday morning - worth keeping an eye on the club website GMBC

Might be one or two GMBCers out on Sunday morning but probably a bit later - 10.30 ish. Dumgoyne Loop looks on the cards given the weather...

Did the Dumgoyne Loop last weekend, it was alright, though the surface on the westie before the pub is very soft and slows down some of the fun bits of trail.

The offroad return through Strathblane just across the main road was fine though other than some muddy bits once you hit Mugdock again, but it's rained a fair bit since then so the road home might be best.

Downshep - that's the one. We came over it from the kyber road and 2 guys at other side having a chat. Dan was one of them methinks 🙂

Hi Iain aye were you with Pete? I was out with the Glasgow meetup lot for a social wee pedal around, hope to see you lot soon if the weather improves and gives us all a chance of some enjoyable riding! I like the sound of some of the ideas on the club board thus far and hope to be able to hook up with some downhill-oriented folks through the spring/summer.

*Edit PS on second thoughts I'm thinking of 3 of the GMBC boys that passed at another spot entirely! I remember a few others though and I think I know where you were!

Hi Dan - we were out a good bit before meetup - saw them coming up from bombhole as we were coming back down Westie. I was out with just one other guy - thought I saw you plus another up at the Bridge ?

Pete did teh same route as us, but an hour or so later

Who knows, too many riders out and it all gets confusing! Pete and the two he was with passed us around the gate with the wee gap in the middle just before the road crossing to the big boulders on the path, but I had the big tyres with 22psi in them and couldn't up the pace very much for a chat!

My knowledge of what things in the park are called is still pretty crap despite riding it all for years. I don't image I'll be up again for a while now after this deluge. Got some days out planned for further afield, uplifts at Inners and some munro rides. Big plans and hopes for 2013!

Anyone up for a nightride on the 27th or 28th? I'm thinking Cathkin? I finish work at 3 both days, any time after that, takes me 30 mins from prestwick. I'm keen to get a look at the new trails.
