has the inbred always been the same with very minor changes or more radical ones? is it possible to tell what year one is? when did they first start making them? any weak points? whats so great about them? approx weight please?roughly whats the sizing like ie small/generous?

I think he means that it was a bit of a 'knocked together in a shed' type of fashion at first, painted white, being steel it rusts, so to hide this they offered it in other colours..
I had one of the early 853 ones back in 2001. It was an ace bike..
started making them around 1999
there's three different kinds I think, the original 853 although you'll be lucky to find one of them.
the first gen DN6 and then the one that's being made now.
buy a new one and there's no real weak points

My DN6 weighed about 5.1 lb (18").

Anyone know how to distinguish which ones are for 100-130mm, 80-100, 63-80mm forks? (I know different generations fall into rough fork reccomendations, but not exactly)

I believe a quick identification of the later models is done by seeing if it has 3 hose mountings on the top tube, more indepth: measure the top tube diameter
if it's 28.6mm diameter, it's 100
if it's 31.8mm diameter its 130
An don't forget the dropouts. These used to be a very nice sliding plate, a la Kona Unit, and in order to cut costs and weight are now track end style. I find it much easier to use the sliding ones.
There were also Ti ones, singlespeed with an appalling Bushnell EBB, 20 in each size made, and geared ones.

I have a SS Inbred with the 'ace' Bushnell EBB, so much better than the PH "Simple' one!!

Cheap and cheerful, pretty tough, little but not too heavy, but oh so right ride.....
There were some new, anniversary, 853 ones too (I have one) that had the newer bridgless stays design (a small number of vertical dropout ones and a larger lot of sliding dropout ones). They came in various colours (mine's sand).
Is being an Inbred 'annorak' a good way to make friends?

IIRC...
1. Started as ss only frame with horizontal track ends and canti mounts, in 853.
2. 2nd generation was 'DN6' Chromoly
3. after a little while it became available with vertical dropouts (2001, my 1st)
4. and then Ti with vertical dropouts or EBB, as limited numbers
5. Then a DN6 EBB. I got on great with mine, and nearly regret selling it even after I'd crashed and bent it.
6. then things get more hazey as the 456 is launched (04/05 at a guess).
7. But then inbred become uprated to longer forks and the afore mentioned sliding drops - one frame for gears or SS. Other changes: larger diameter top tube and bridgeless chainstays. Heavier too, and IMHO, just not as good to ride. 2006?
8. An 853 version of this frame, 07? Summer season frames might have been started about this time too.
9. Then to save costs, the frames use a disc compatible track end for gears or ss. Prices became lower than ever. 07 too I think.
10. Think it's roughly the same today, but with more colours?
No inbred is very light, but I prefer the skinnier ones, and I have never had much trouble with rust...
