UPDATE: Reviews section refreshed, redesigned, searchable: Go take a look
I've got a week in Girona in September. Got a road bike hired for 4 days. I've got some ideas for routes already but happy to hear some recommendations from those who've been/are in the know. Riding with my wife, probably up to 100km max per day (we're looking for enjoyable rather than all day epics, though would be nice to try some of the well known climbs too), and cafe stops would be nice.
Secondly, any recommendations for eating out in Girona? And ideas for a day trip not on the bikes? To the coast maybe? Somewhere accessible by public transport?
There are plenty of bike shops in town, all of them have routes available for download. Be careful if you take routes off Strava, especially anything from a pro rider as they often use the direct (ie unpleasant) routes into / out of town.
Eat Sleep Cycle is right on the main route back into town from Els Angels. Personally, I much prefer La Fabrica as the cycling cafe of choice. https://www.lafabricagirona.com/ It's tucked away a bit in a little courtyard but it's a nice little place to relax.
Els Angels is the Box Hill of Girona - easy to reach from town and it'll be awash with pros but it's a nice climb, one of those that pretty much anyone can cruise up but which is quite hard work if you decide to really have a go at it!
Eating out - again, loads of options. Try and explore just a little bit behind the main tourist drag, there are loads of little restaurants with courtyard seating.
Lots to explore in and around Girona, you can easily lose yourself around the Old Town for half a day, the cathedral is spectacular. There's a mainline train station, you can even be in Barcelona in 45 minutes. No idea what bus travel is like, sorry.
It's a nice city - just watch out for some of the cycling restrictions, there's a one-way system for cyclists around the Old Town area now, simply because it's really busy with cyclists now. There are substantial and immediate fines if you're stopped by the police too and not knowing about it is not taken as an excuse!
