I thought I had it all sorted earlier with the first wheel, but I am now assuming it was just luck...
I'm trying to do the ghetto tubeless thing on a set of 717's and am having real trouble getting the tyre to seat properly around the valve. This seems to be mainly due to the nice people at Schwalbe putting an extra thick area of rubber around the valve on their 20 inch tubes, and when the tube is stretched onto the rim, it doesn't sit down nicely like the rest of the tube does, and seems to partially block the lip on the rim.
I've managed to get one tyre to seat properly, but am rather nervous that the bead might not be engaged as much as I'd like, and at the first sign of pressure will just burp at that point.
Anyone else had this sort of problem?
You could try drilling the inside valve hole to 3/8". As recommended by Stans. Dont forget to de-burr.
Good Luck
yep - it's a bit of a worry but my 717's worked fine for 12 months .
Screw the retaining nut down tight tight tight .
good luck too
I now use Stans rims 🙂
Oooooh.. good idea greasy, that might seat everything a little lower... will look into that one. Cheers
brownpants... I'd use Stans if I could afford them!
Will screwing them down as tight as I can again and see how I get on tomorrow...
It's about now I'm wishing I had a compressor and not just a track pump!
Compressor from Aldi is a fantastic item, make ghetto tubeless and the advanced ghetto method (emulate stans with cut out valve and gaffa tape)a breaze on 717's was about £75.
Google "ghetto tubeless"
Nip to a petrol station if you need a compressor? I blew mine up there as my car compressor wouldn't work.
I've managed to sort out both of my wheels with 717s now, with a lot of faff, but can I get my girlfriends to work? Can I ****!!! So gave up on them in the end and converted my other wheels with wider rims instead, which was a LOT easier... I'm gonna try some different tubes next to see if that helps on hers.
And I had a sneaky look in Aldi yesterday to see if they had an compressors in, but no... I'll keep any eye out in the future though.
nice to see anothe super ghetto user wally 8)
