I tried to replace my compact chain set with a standard, and ended up with one that didn't fit. The spindle was simply too large for my BB.
Are there as many chain set specs as there are BB types? If so, how can manufacturers sustain tooling up for every variant?!?
Anyway, my BB is an FSA BB6200 MegaExo24 (68mm), and I still want a standard chain set to go with it.
How can I find the right one? I am overwhelmed with possibilities, and my son - who used to do all my work for me - has flown the coop!
What is the the chainset you want to fit ?
It doesn't matter what BB you have, you'll need to change it to match the Chainset.
sounds like you've bought a BB30 chainset. It might be cheaper to return it and just get the chainrings you want, there's nothing stopping you putting, say, a 52, 39 on a 110 BCD chainset.
I think maybe I'm confusing terms. I bought a whole new crankset off ebay with chinring sizes I want, and I thought it would be a direct replacement for the one I currently have. The latter is a Wilier-branded FSA - so I don't know the exact FSA name for it - while the one I bought is FSA Gossamer. The spindle on the latter is big enough, though, that it doesn't look like it would fit through the bottom bracket shell.

I got the whole crankset for £25, and looking at the chainrings alone, they would cost more. I am going to go home now to see if the chainring bolts are the same size, and if I might then just change the rings from one to the other.
it used to be a whole lot simpler.....suspect joemmo is correct - hope lucky and bcd same and can swop the rings.....not a guide to chainsets but came across this recently and is a very good piece of work on BB's

Hell’s bells! The crankset I bought has a different span between the bolts than that on my compact.
so I reiterate my question:
How do I find a crankset with the chainring sizes I want, compatible with my bottom bracket shell?
It'll be cheaper and easier to get a new BB. Tell us what new chainset you have and I'm sure someone can tell you what BB you need. If your worried about fitting it I can do that for you 👍
What chainring sizes do you have and what do you want? What else are you after that is different to the current cranks?
The easiest answer is that you need another FSA Mega Exo chainset but if it's a 24mm axle then maybe Shimano will fit - not sure if they are cross compatible.
****ing nightmare ain’t it 😟
i am in a similar boat, recently got a 2nd hand road bike with a 53-39 chain set and wanted to change to 50-34 ( or close )
splashed out on a crankset by same manufacturer only to find it is a 30mm spindle and not 24 in spite of allegedly being megaexo compatable, am now waiting delivery of a bb that will ( hopefully ) rectify the situation although as most 30mm are push fit it took a bit of hunting to find a bsa screw fit one.
if you want to keep it simple then just buy a Shimano chainset and Shimano BB. 24mm. No problem.
You sure you want high gears like that? Only racers tend to use std doubles these days, and then not even on hilly stages.
