I have a Crosscheck, it's awesome, great ride, one of my favorite bikes and it's soooo comfortable. But the brakes are rubbish. I'd really like someting with discs (that is the sound of a worm-can opening).
So the Pompetamine looks great value, but it looks a bit short along the TT.
My top pick would be a Salsa Veya, however I've checked the options from Singular and Cotic too.
What I'd like to know is what am I missing in the geometry? The numbers for the Veya or the crosscheck look very similar to those of my 29er Scandal. TT seems about the same, angles slightly slacker, but that could be changed with a shorter fork. BB drop is probally a little different. So the biggest difference is the headtube length, which is longer for bikes designed for drops to put the bars stem higher.
If the numbers are so close maybe a 29er with drops would have a similar ride. I could use a stem to raise the bars, which would be shallow drop anyway.
Any thoughts / expereince / opinions?
Unless you want an excuse to buy a new bike could you not put a disc fork on your Crosscheck? A cheap way to upgrade a bike that you like
drofluf i ran that idea past the surly lads a while back and they suggested altho people do its not wise as you may take the crosscheck places its not wise to with your new found braking confidence lol that and it voids the warranty
tho i know lots of people do run them with discs up front
to the op ive seen a couple of karate monkeys with drops and i had a singular with drops but it didnt feel like a cx just an mtb with different bars on. nice tho just different
oh and if its a 54 i might be interested in the surly frameset and some bits if you sell ๐
are you comparing the right sizes of bike?
looking at a cross chect the ett is much closer to my pompino than my scandal...
Have, and still am considering a disc fork. I currently ride my crosscheck in the most of the same places as my MTB, only held back by the slickish tyres, it's just that cantis hurt the hands on long decents.
i have been looking recently for another frame cant justify discs so was looking at pompinos too and the 54cm crosscheck i have has a 560mm eff tt and the large pomp has a 555mm eff tt and the med has 540mm
The XL Pomp has a 576mm TT, which sounds a lot shorter than the 600mm TT on my 60cm crosscheck, but is about the same as a Med Scandal (although i have a Lrg).
