So has anyone got one to give me some real feedback on it? Been close to ordering one for several weeks now. Looks the perfect bike for commuting, canals and bridleways etc.

Have seen one in the flesh though it was too big so they will have to order me in a 52cm one. I need that last bit of inspiration to make me bite the bullet and get it ordered...

mmmmmmmm

As the owner of 5 genesis bikes, I maybe slightly biased, but I reckon for a grand, it's very hard to beat.
If you consider how much the versa shifters cost and that you are getting disc brakes, it's good vfm. Oh and James from Genesis is a nice bloke too.

Yeah, room isnt a problem as I only have an old stumpy full suss and my very tired commuter apart from a frame or two and bits n bobs in the shed.

Bloody love orange bikes too.. my only slight angst is that you will be able to get an 11speed alfine in the future on it presumably, would i regret getting the 8 speed...

geoffj - have you got a road / cross bike in your Genesis collection?
If so what are your thoughts on it / them?

One of the recent CyclingPlus editions gave it a very positive review.

I've seen one in the flesh as Edinburgh Bicycle had one out the last time I was in there. It looked very nice indded and if I didn't already have a Roadrat Alfine I'd be very tempted to get as my next Bike-to-Work purchase.

From the review it looks like it's geared quite low (a good bit lower than my Roadrat) and it sounded like it'd be about right for off-roading. The standard gearing might be a little on the low side for a fast commute though.

Yup, I've got a Vapour CX. Lovely bike, very capable. Decent spec for the money and a little different than the more common Kona and Specialized offerings. It has the tabs for guards, so will be good as a commuter. It was the only bike I rode all last winter, perfect for the snowy/grotty roads with a bit of cheeky single track thrown in.

I'd love a day one alfine, but something will have to make way for it first!

Don't say that, the lack of a suitable granny gear, is the only think putting me off one as tourer! 😆

I really fancy one of these for my commute.

Mainly on road but with big hills.

Epicsteve what chainring are you running on your Roadrat?

I seriously looked at this for my commuter, but I do some big hills and the range of the 8spd Alfine wasn;t enough for me. This was the only thing that put me off.

There will presumably be an 11spd upgrade option sometime, but only when Versa get round to making 11spd shifters. I guess it'll be a couple of hundred more than the current model. This pushes it well over the grand bike to work limit, so maybe not worth their while making it at all?

It came with one of the 45t Alfine chainsets on and that's what's still fitted, although I increased the rear cog from 18 to 20t. Gearing seems perfect for my commute and other running around but would be a tad high for off-road or loeaded touring I think.

I think the review said Day-One has a 40t chainset and a 20t at the back.

Gearing looked pretty much spot on for a tourer...

There are a couple of these on Ebay for £899.99 from the Bike Shop in Hexham (not that I've ever dealt with them but they have decent Ebay feedback) - one a 54cm and the other a 56cm. Might be of interest to someone.

Hmm currently run 44:16 for my commute so yeah that would be a bit low..

or take a look at the on-one offering, it was out earlier this year, and is markedly cheaper too:

I've got one and I LOVE it. Mainly used for a mile flt commute, but also done a few 30mile rides down the Trans-pennine trail on it, which was good.

Highly recommended.

epicsteve - Bike Shop in Hexham is my LBS and they're thoroughly nice chaps.

But as for the bike, if you're wanting a commuter, you'll be wanting full-length mudguards. With track-end dropouts, thet's a right pain in the A for wheel removal.

Damn you for starting this thread just after I saw one in the flesh the other day!

So, for a 12 mile commute, half on tow/cycle paths, half on road, thinking of one of these with 32mm tyres, mudguards and a pannier - will it fit? It's relatively flat - will it be too low geared?

And the sizing felt a bit odd - sat on the 54cm one and it seemed really stretched, but not sure I'd need to go down to the 52cm at 5'9"? Might be toe/mudguard issues on the smaller frame?

I've been eyeing up an Alfine Genesis for a while also. I'm giving the 1x9er a go at the moment (to see if it would be viable) and getting on quite well with it. Might just have to be my next purchase. Love the idea of the Alfine.
