My gears go up the cassette but not down.
I have oiled up my cables,adjusted absolutely eveything even changed mechs.
Still no joy and I have a ride planned for sunday!!!
I'd [u]change [/u]the cables.

Yep. Odds on you need new inner and outer cables. Go for full lenght outhers if you can! 🙂

drill out the cable stops and fit full length outers plus cable oilers + 1
as above, new cables would be my first thought as it's easy. Failing that, I'd consider whether the mech hanger is straight.
If it won't shift down to the smaller cogs then there's too much friction in the system. Assuming you have a High Normal mech. If it's a SRAM mech make sure the length of outer that bends round to the rear mech is correct.
As others have said change not only the cables but the outers too - they corrode inside and cause massive friction.
A bent mech hanger won't help either but will affect general shifting not just one way.
