[Closed] Gatestar Nobby Nic Wear

Well my rear tyre is almost slick now... time to get some new rubber. Looking at the 2015 nobby nic as had an older nic on the yeti and really rated it. Unfortunately with the clearance on the 575, I'm a bit limited with tyres sizes so it really had to be a 2.25 to cope with the mud.

My decision boils down to what compound now... Ride the usual stuff, trail centres, peak district, and entering first gravity enduro races this year. Can't decide between the gatestar, pacestar, or trailstar compound in that order. Love the idea of the gatestar but worried that the edge knobs are just going to be so soft they're going to tear up, and wonder if just going pacestar will give me a bit more longevity. The last thing I want is having to replace a £45 tyre because the edge knobs are knackered whereas the centre tread is fine.

Almost ruling out the trailstar just because of the wear rate and seen as the enduros seem to have a decent amount of climbing, I want every little bit of help I can to get up the hills in the best shape possible.

So... anyone used the gatestar and had really bad wear on them or are they ok in the long run?

Only ever used PaceStar. Got an old NN on the back now and a 2015 model on the front.

The back tyre has been on the front of my bike for around 2 years and there's still loads of life left on it.

Not sure if that helps with the side tread for the GateStar but the centre tread should last well.

Pacestar compound is awful on wet rocks and roots, so would probably go for a trailstar as a happy medium.
I think you'd get through a gatestar in no time as a rear tyre.

I know the centre tread is fine in terms of wear, but it's those side knobs I'm concerned about. How hav eyou found hte trailstar centre wear? My old pace lasted a decent amrount of time and I didn't really feel any issues with rocks... but I was always somewhat cautious on them (Coed-Y-Brenin was 'great' for that!)

I've only used trailstar on the front (hans dampf) but was very happy with wear rate, and had much more confidence on wet stuff after pacestar.

I've heard a few on here have have problems with them as a rear tyre with side knobs coming off on rocky terrain though...

Gatestar is the softest shirley? So you'll kill it quicker than a Trail Star.

I'd have thought for what you want Trailstar is ideal? That said, on the back a Pace Star may be adequate, you'll sacrifice some grip, but it'll roll faster and last longer.

The gatestar us a but of a weird one. It basically has the pacestar centre tread, but the vertstar (super super soft) side knobs. The back has a pacestar on it now and I haven't particularly had any problems apart from slipping into super sloppy stuff, but I think that's probably more a limitation of the tread rather than the compound...
