Searched at length for this but cannot find the answer, does anyone know if it's possible to force Connect to recalculate Training Load after modifying an activity?

I'm no slave to it since I track my stuff elsewhere, but I do have a long running thread of activity which I'd like to maintain - and recently my training load has been dropping off a cliff according to Connect.

It's clearly incorrect and I've narrowed it down to heart rate spikes in activities, Garmin has auto-updated my max heart rate based on these spikes (219bpm 😊) and I guess subsequent activities have correspondingly received a lower training load score.

I've now corrected all the activities by removing the bad data (typically the first few minutes of outdoor rides) yet the load remains unchanged and is still very much trending downwards - I had assumed it would automatically correct itself.

Do you not need to tell Garmin your max heart rate again as well?

Unsure on the update,  but I have found that the wrist hr is crap.  loads of spikes and cadence lock is a pain.  Doesnt work well with big gloves in winter for riding either for some reason

@DickBarton - I changed this manually last night and switched off the auto-detect, it doesn't seem to have made a difference. I'm assuming it calculated the load based on MHR at that point in time and won't retrospectively recalculate it if I modify something?

@grahamt1980 - This is using a chest strap, I do have a Fenix but don't cycle with it - prefer to use the chest strap with my 830. Incidentally I find the wrist based is pretty good when I've compared the two, so long as I keep the strap nice and snug (otherwise it tracks well but lags a bit).

I am not an expert on this, so I may well be wrong. My understanding of the way Garmins metrics work, is that it's calculated on the device and those values are transferred to the cloud (i.e. Garmin Connect). Connect itself doesn't do any calculating, it just stores and displays the data.

I'm not sure how you edited the HR values, but I think you'd have to do something to run those values through the Garmin algorithm and then import back into Connect.

Personally, I'd not worry too much about it as after a few weeks it will sort itself out. You get this sort of thing when you exercise with a Garmin device which doesn't do training load, you see certain training values, but not others, which is weird.

I'm interested if anyone has any better input on this though.

Cheers @Traildog I edited the HR by trimming the first few minutes off the activity in Connect on the PC (the HR spikes typically occur early in outdoor rides).

Take your point on things righting themselves in a few days/weeks and I'm becoming resigned to letting it work itself out, I use TP/WKO for tracking so it's not a big deal - just a bit of frustration trying to get to the bottom of it and tidying up!

I'm keen to know this too. I used a chest strap instead of my watch last week on a ride and it was bonkers. Loads of 200+bpm when I know my absolute max is 170.

I've edited my max heart rate on my connect app and after syncing it seems to have updated on watch and bike computer.

However, I think you are right, it won't recalculate past activities.

If I was willing to play with this, I would try deleting the original activity off your Garmin device.

Export your edited tcx file from Connect. Then import this file into your device to see the effect of this. I read that the devices re-calculate training load on import of an activity.

However, this may totally screw your data up even more. So my recommendation is to forget about it, as there is a danger of actual real life heart rate spikes.

This sounds like the making of the sort of video I watch on youtube while eating my breakfast in the morning.

There's a few weeks worth to get through so I think I'll pass, can't face dealing with all that!

I'll just park Connect for a while and come back when the bad data has fallen off the back, in the meantime I'll try and get to the bottom of why the spikes are happening in the first place.

Cheers!

How fresh is the battery in the HRM?

It's been in a while to be fair, although status in Connect reads 'OK' and TrainingPeaks Virtual suggests it's something like 84% last time I paid any real notice.

Had thought I'll swap it over anyway, strap has already been washed to rule that out.

No spikes when sat on the trainer which could suggest a static issue with base layer or jersey - only I've been using these for a while and never had an issue previously.

Only other thing I can think of is making sure I get some moisture on the pads.
