I'm still quite new to Garmins and had a problem with my 510 on last nights ride and I'm after some guidance.
Approx 14 miles into my ride I had a bit of a crash, the 510 was fine and still recording as I carried on my ride. Shortly afterwards I tapped the screen to check on the time and i noticed it was now switched off. I turned it back on and straight away I was given the option to save or discard my last ride, I chose to save it and just restarted a new workout.
Once back home I sync the 510 with my iPad and I got a "synching failed - server error" message. Going into my activities on garmin connect I can see its uploaded the second half of the ride but not the first. If I check the recent rides on my 510 I can see its saved both rides from last night but only the second half will upload.
Is the file corrupt in some way due to the crash and the device powering off? Or is there a way I can manually upload the first half?
I don't own a 510, but I think that you can connect direct to a PC via mini-USB
Search for "*.gpx" (no inverted commas) and copy any that you find to PC. You might be able to upload them manually to various websites such as Strava, Bikehike, etc or there's a range of free software out there that you can try opening the file with.
Hopefully yours will be in there
Did you try re-syncing with the Garmin Connect app? I find it very tempramental at times (ie. most of the time) and sometimes need to re-start Garmin and app in a few permutations before it'll find my latest ride(s). Still, I prefer to sync wirelessly so I persevere! If it worked first time where would the fun be in that??
Garmin units don't store the files in GPX format but as FIT files, these are compressed binary format, a bit like the difference between normal writing and txt spk.
You can connect your 510 to your computer using a USB mini cable. It will (should) appear as another device or drive in Explorer/Finder. Double click it and you should see a folder called "Garmin", double click that and you will see a list of folders. Double click "Activities" and you will now see all your rides, they have names that are the timestamp of when they were saved: "2015-05-19:08-10-20.fit" or something like that.
Copy the files to somewhere on your PC. I do this with all my rides then I have a backup. Copy the file that isn't loading to a second location so that you can play around without messing up the first copy.
Now see if you can load the ride in to Garmin Connect. If you can't then you need to find out what's wrong with the file. There are various on-line tools to help you with this: do a search for "corrupt fit file".
Good luck.
Might be this from a previous thread. Mine switched off a few rides ago when I tried to switch screen mid-ride to maps. link
