Was going to take my Garmin etrex 30 over to Canada as visiting a mate and I'm wanting to do a bit of road biking. Will the etrex work? Would I need to download or buy another map? If i didn't do this would it still show the gpx track on a blank screen which I could theoretically follow?

Thanks

Search for OSM canada. You should be able to find a map (or maps given how big Canada is) to download.

Here's a link for the North America region (in German)ย  https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/DE:OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download#Nordamerika

This is probably the easiest website to get maps: https://garmin.openstreetmap.nl

Either pick a complete country/province from the dropdown, or you can select the tiles you want. Then download the gmapsupp version, and copy it onto the Etrex.

You'll find that a direct download to the 30 is sloooooooooow. Far quicker to pick up a micro SD card (max 32GB) and put maps and pre-planned tracks on that; you do need to follow a specific directory structure though...from memory: maps go into Garmin, tracks etc go into Garmin/GPX
