if they take the scrolling feature off screen lock, or at least have the option to choose on or off scrolling then id be happy, really don't mind it being stuck on one screen especially for navigation purposes, but it was next to useless for me last weekend scrolling at 100mph you physically couldn't stop it scrolling at all until you stopped, took it off, dried it and even then it still wasn't great just being stationary as rain was still hitting it

I don't really get why its like this on the new 820, my edge 1000 prior was the same capacitive screen and then never once did that! so I do think its the firmware

Yes, they have definitely ballsed something up re. the sensitivity settings, they cannot possibly be working as intended! Hopefully they'll issue another update soon.

This is the previous software page http://gawisp.com/perry/edge/
and this is how I was shown how to do it https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?343989-How-do-you-roll-back-software-to-earlier-version

Note this is for a Touring model, but I would think its the same, but please check first.

Does anyone expect a software update to fix the duff touchscreen, or is it likely that if your touchscreen is unpredictable then it's always going to be. Mine is a nightmare – doesn't work with full finger gloves. Rain, sweat and sometimes ghosts change the screen.

It's a real shame. I like the unit in general, but the touchscreen is appalling.

bluebird - as above ive had a edge 1000 for over a year used in every weather going and it never once scrolled by itself, it had the same capacitive screen too

its something to do with the firmware I believe, or general setup, its rendered useless in rain to me as it stands, which is pretty annoying

ps ive followed those instructions and cant get it to work back to 3.20 , downloaded it, renamed it, chucked it in the generic garmin folder and it just says 4.10 still loaded when It boots up

@Oscillate: check the name of the file. I mis-named mine when I did a firmware rollback the other day on my Edge Touring and wondered why it wouldn't work.
It has to be called gupdate.gsd

Renamed it, turned the Garmin on and it flashed up saying the version of software installed was newer than the update, was I sure I wanted to proceed.
Hit yes and it does the full update.

cheers crazy legs - will have another go at dinner time, i did rename it from memory but was rushing so will have another go

did you just dump it in the main garmin folder? (the one with all the other weird files etc and subfolders (courses, activities etc), or in another subfolder?) as i just put in the main folder and it didnt ask to replace and files in there, just loaded it in (assumed it would ask in there to replace a file too)

Garmin > Files. It's the headline directory.
There should be a host of other weird sounding text files in there: gma..., gdoc..., etc

It is NOT the New Files folder, that's for uploading routes and that takes .gpx / .tcx files.

Haven't got my Garmin to hand so can't check the actual directory link.

Cheers crazy legs- that's worked!!! back to 3.20 and no swiping on locked mode 🙂 🙂 thanks a million!

only downside I can see at the min is cos ive got it connected to my phone, as soon as I keep turning on the device it tries to get me to install the latest software? is there a way of stopping this? ive done it on garmin launch, but assume its cos its connected via Bluetooth on my phone

People on the Garmin forum are reporting better WiFi connection with the 5.10 firmware, I haven't had time to try it yet.

I've updated mine, not ridden with it yet though.

Updated to 5.1 and rode in this morning in constant but not torrential rain. Pleased to say the unit worked perfectly. It wasn't locked but I had no problems with random scrolling or the rain activating the touchscreen (sensitivity set to low). I couldn't swipe, etc, wearing my winter gloves but I have the remote now so not an issue. A quick wipe dry after the ride and I was able to press the screen to save the ride with no problems.

I used mine on 5.1 yesterday, in the dry and it worked flawlessly, first time its done that in a while, no rain at all but plenty of mud and grit and it never swiped on its own once!

the test will be in the rain now, so will see

Getting a little frustrated with the touch screen now with winter gloves. Trying to do anything means stopping and gloves off. Never really had a problem with the 810 though the interface on the 820 does seem to make more use of the touchscreen and the areas to hit seem to be smaller.

mrblobby My screen is ridiculously sensitive if set to max. In medium it's OK, even in rain, but in full finger winter gloves I have to lick my finger tip for the screen to work. Not ideal, but it works.

Thanks. Might have a fiddle with the settings. Think it's medium at the moment.

Sounds like you need an Edge Remote. 😕

🙂 I have an Edge remote. It's actually really good for page scrolling. Just anything else is annoying.

The remote works great, but it's limited. A few more customisable buttons (with more options for what they can do) plus making them contextualised (i.e. do different things on different screens) would be really good. And a little joystick for scrolling the map!!

we had two brand new 820 in a row (for my missus) and both had ongoing faults with the screen sensitivity, ghosting and freezing up for long periods - software updates/rollback did not help

after the second showed the same fault, we got refunded and paid to upgrade to the Edge 1000 = no problems since.

well after a dry warmish no rain ride on sunday working perfectly, out last night, and recorded the ride absolutely fine, went to stop it and the screen just frozen, had restart the timer several times before I managed to actually click the save ride button

so back to randomly having crap sensitivity again out of no where
