So I have a Garmin 810 which has solely been used for tracking rides so far.
But I'm heading to The Lakes and would like to use it as a lazy navigation device.
Two main questions - 1) what file format should I download? 2) do I need some form of 'base map' or similar loaded prior to using the nav function? If so, what do I need?
.. and any other helpful suggestions on how to use much appreciated, thanks.
From last weekends experience, take a paper map and print out of your planned route as well. That would have saved us a 3 hour hike-a-bike.

Copy it to the Garmin directory on your 810.
In the 801 activity profiles, navigation settings, there is an option to choose the type of routing; choose Mountain Biking.
If you want to follow gpx tracks; put them in the Garmin/Newfiles directory and they will appear as courses.
Jointhedotz - how on earth did you manage that?
What they said though

See where we started going up.....we should have skirted the bottom of the hill round to the lake.
Basically there were 2 paths and the gpx we were following wasn't pinpoint accurate, we followed the higher rather than lower.
This was what we were following: http://fattyres.co.uk/routes/lake-district/high-street-ullswater
maybe consider always taking a proper map and compass and know how to use them if going into the mountains eh! ๐
Last time I rely solely on technology lol

There is heavy load on that site at the moment. I requested a map of scotland and it quoted me 3.9 day waiting time - 900 requests in front of me.
I have the whole UK OSM maps available. 350Mb, I'll upload to google drive and share.

I followed the DC Rainmaker advice for mine and that seems to work pretty well.
Wow. Thank you all. Really helpful.
allthepies - I've downloaded the maps, thank you. Probably being extra thick now - but assume I have to get these on to garmin (MicroSD card?) and then point garmin to use them? Oh so good with tech!
And to confirm - map and compass will be present and correct. I'm just lazy...
Thanks again all!
OK. Just read the DCRainmaker link. Transfer of maps looks pretty easy. Result.
I followed the DC Rainmaker setup last year and used it in Italy for the Tuscany trail. It worked but I was advised of one thing that might be relevant here.
The 810 doesn't like courses over 200 miles, it apparently causes funny things to happen. I have had courses up to 180 miles with no issues, but when I created them, I had the 200 miles thing in mind.
Thanks. Fortunately for me 200+ mile routes are unlikely to be a problem!

Get an SD card, create a directory on it called "Garmin" and drop the .img file into that directory. The filename doesn't matter, just make sure it has the ".img" extension. Plug that into your Garmin and it should recognise the map.If it doesn't then the rainmaker link above has instructions for enabling the map.
I've nicked a copy of that, allthepies - hope that was OK ๐ณ

It's there for whoever wants it. It's reasonably up to date, I created it in early March this year.
