I am just getting my head around the best format to use for my rides with my Garmin 800.
I have followed a planned .TCX route into work, but when I wanted to follow it back home it wasn't obvious how to do this.
Do I just press navigate back to start? Will this option follow the route back to the start or just calculate the quickest route?
I guess what I want is a file that will allow me to navigate in both directions A-B and B-A.
Does such a file exist (GPX track?) or is there something I can do in the Garmin 800 unit?

Use Base camp the freebie software DL to make the routes and tracks. Its actually very good.
Routes are on road only you a get the car type gps turns etc very good
Use tracks for off road - useful crumb trail type display on OS map
It will calculate the route back depending on your settings. I (and most others) turn it off because we ont want it to auto calculate a new route if we miss the turning.
If you want a get me home function. Just create a Point Of interest (POI) your home and then tell it to navigate to it based on your settings such as shortest route etc

Back to start
this will use your current activity to take you back to the start
Lots of ways of doing it. Best bit of advice is just keep using it it becomes second nature after a bit
If you've already cycled a route then it will have recorded a Track. Find that in Track Manager, then just Reverse it to go back the way you came.
On a sort of similar note, how do you get the next turn info displayed when following a route?
You need it set in automotive mode and be following a route
Does anyone know how to make a course from the history without connecting it to a pc?
I'm sure in the past i've just gone into courses then hit create new course. That brings up the history and you select the route you want to save. You then tick the green arrow and it saves it as a course.
Except it doesn't save it as a course any more?
Any idea what i'm doing wrong?
I've got the routing working once but it was determined to route me back to the start rather than continuing on the route.
I'm guessing you hadn't disabled any auto-recalculation option.
