My little lad has a 2011 Orange G2.
The old head set was a ball and cage, but it was shot, so bought a new headset from CRC. 1+1/8th. Sorted.
Fitted it but thought the steerer tube felt a bit loose, but tightened it up and seemed okay, 3 weeks later it's knackerd, well loads on play between the bearing and the steerer tube. So I bought a 'Pig' from CRC ( http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/fsa-orbit-xlii-headset-no-5-/rp-prod1164) same bloody thing, the top bearing seems too big for the steerer, and is loose, again.
What have I done wrong? Any ideas?
Thanks guys.

Thanks for that, nealy wasted as much time as I having buying yet another headset.

In all seriousness the bikes in bits and we were going to smash an early ride out so any answers that could help would be welcome.

The bearing does'nt sit against the steerer (unless its a lefty/headshock).There should be a compression ring that sits under the top cap.

I fear this will not end well for all concerned.
Photos will help.

I assume that you have the crown race and the wedge expander thing installed correctly?

That's perfect! It came as a kit and yes there's an anodised fillet (#4) that's split so woukd fill the gap, maybe the star bolt isn't pulling it down tight enough.
Cheers guys back to the garage!

Check that there is 3-5mm of stem above the steerer,or the preload cap will bottom out on the steerer.

All sorted! Cheers Rorschach!
Was doing my head in as presumed there would be such sloppy tolerances in the bearing fittings.
Thanks for helping out so quickly, Appreciated.
