Just wondering, but if I bought a front fork mouned rack for my bike, do I need special/smaller/different panniers to what I'd use on the rear?

depends on which rack you buy, if it lowriders then large rear panniers might sit too close to the ground. It its a proper high front rack (surly nice rack style) then any panniers should work.

You'll need low riders - often marketed as front or univesal. Total capacity will be about 20 litres (2 x 10 ltr bags)

I think the bags I already have will be too big. And I'm not buying new bags, so that's that idea in the bin. No worries, we'll just carry less stuff. ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks for the advice chaps ๐Ÿ™‚

Andy, cheers, I was just thinking out loud really, as I've got spare bags and that rack is cheap.

I think we'll do a trail pack tonight and if there's not enough space I'll give you a ring! ๐Ÿ˜€

I think we'll be OK though to be fair, and the less space I have, the less crap I have to haul about!

Yup

Assume you are not taking the tool box then?

ALL the tools and spares I'll need are in one small outer pockes of my panniers - Spare tubes for both bikes, powerlink, patch kit, multitool with chain splitter, cable ties, couple of spare bolts, chain lube, Leatherman. Pump is currently mounted on my forks using the lowrider mount ๐Ÿ™‚

Rear panniers for clothes and sleeping bag, and then a trailer loaded with tent, mats, cooking gear, plus bar bag for camera, wallet and nibbles

It's gonna be like pedalling an 18-wheeler with the trailer loaded up as well though...!

I might ride it into work on Friday and stick it on the weighbridge for a giggle. I'll bet it's 40kg+++ all up.....

My tourer weighs ~40kg inc food and water and thats just a stock steel tourer with 4 panniers. With a trailer id expect over 40kg.

If you can ditch the trailer and fit the stuff into panniers it would prob be easier/lighter (assuming you on road?), in which case somthing from here might suit...

Yes, road touring round Devon and Cornawall, 12 days starting Saturday, me and Mrs PP ๐Ÿ™‚

We HAVE to use the trailer to get the camping gear in: Becasue we're all set up now and not buying any new gear, but using the stuff we already have, and a new smaller tent we got in a sale last summer.
Most of our gear we used for motorcycle touring and we used to get a massive amount of stuff on the motorbikes, and we've had some of it for years. Full size thermarests, stoves, sleeping bags etc.

I'm trying to suggest ways of saving weight to Mrs PP but I was a bit silly for saying packing the trailer was her job! On the table last night was a pile of stuff which we have no chance of taking all of, but I can't say much about that now..... I just have to tow it! ๐Ÿ˜€
