Morning all

My 10+year old light has packed up and I need a new front light.

I'm completely out of the loop. What's the current best value light-de-jour?

Cheers

Im

1) For on road or off road use?

2) Budget?

Exposure will be the answer depending on (2).

Exposure or second hand exposure.

2nd hand six pack that is still going strong on the bars

Diablo on my lid for MTB or on the bars for bike packing/ road riding in the depth of winter.

2 usb chargeable lights from Aldi on the commuter. The lezene lights with a rubber band look similar.

MTB batteries lumenator on her bars and Chili Tech capsule on the lid is a reasonable price do it all setup

Two lights allows for failure of one (battery life or other unexpected fault).

I've had a few lights over the years and very happy with my lumenator. Sturdy, bright, easy to use.

yep, got mine out (2 or more years sat in a box) when my (6yr old) exposure needed to be sent off for repair. The Halfords light fired up, had a pretty impressive beam & the battery was still good.

.. exposure if you have the cash but mtb batteries for your budget (or Halfords advanced, if you want an all-in-one, just budget for a better mount)

Do MTB Batteries still do business? I've always been a little wary of trying to order something from a website which looks like it was archived in the 90's.

OP after low budget, one of the few boxes Exposure don't tick!

Chili website is also similar 90s style to MTB Batts. I find it somewhat reassuring in an odd way.  I feel they've spent time sourcing a decent product rather than wrapping generic crap in a very slick package and shouting about it.

I've had PBs at night with my cheap and cheerful setup!

Also both have easily replacement batteries which is the normal failure point.

Not low budget, but you can't beat a Maxx D mk13 for £230 with STW discount imo for a balance of big lumens (4000)/value for money/light that's going to last for some years

Exposure Toro here. Riding decades tried them all. Exposure for me from now on.

If you were a full member you could take advantage of the discounts section on Exposures outlet. There, inc the discount, you can get a Maxx D for £219

True, but they do repairs so second hand is an option.

I bought one of the newer Halfords 1600 lumen lights and it is garbage. Today the thread on the mount stripped just adjusting it.

Had a 1600 Halfords for a few years. Battery died but it has cost me less than a tenner a year and when I can get it apart I bet it will take new batteries. Just bought the updated version, the 1800. Stacks of mounts which are handy. Not sure on battery life yet but these are removeable flat top 18650s so spare on order. I do prefer spare batteries .

Plenty of activity on MTB batteries Facebook page. Also there's a mobile number you can try. I've always found Mark(?) to be very good at responding to messages and very helpful. I imagine his back up would be every bit as good as Exposures. I actually treated myself to an Exposure Axis for my helmet light, it's very pretty and well made but I would rather a simpler light.

Moon Meteor Storm Pro, 2000 lumens and can be had for £55 from Leisure Lakes. Easily handled a 3 hour night for me last week and the mount is solid. Easy to flick between boost and low modes without 15 million clicks and remembers the last mode you turned it on in.

Combined with a Diablo on the helmet it’s perfect.

I had the Halfords 1600 for several years ands it’s a good cheap option but the mount is garbage, once the elastic stretches even a tiny bit it’s done and winds up pointing at the floor or in your face.

This was well know, and is why most ppl recommended using the hope QR mount with this light

Hope Qr Handlebar Mount - Plastic – BRINK

I believe so, it's run by smudge off here and all the reports I've heard have been great and is great at getting old lights back up and running (new batteries / connectors etc)

Just had a couple of batteries sorted out by Smudge at MTB batteries - great job as always. I've got a Gloworm light unit he's going to fix in the NY for me - he's certainly still in business

I never rated the Halfords 1600lm either. Lost the rubber socket covers quite quickly, the included mounts were crap and attachment wasn't in the centre of gravity so no matter what mount you used it moved round the bars unless tightened to an unreasonable torque.

I've got a Lifeline Pavo currently, which is decent for an all-in-one solution at a price below Endura. Only drawback is that it has a non-standard bracket with no obvious way to swap to a GoPro style mount. Bracket design needs allen keys to install too.
