the GF has a Sun Ringle Jumping Flea rear hub.
the chain and casette are both new, so that isn't the problem.
when she sets off occasionally the cranks spin and there is a "clonk" noise.
whilst riding along if you back pedal and then continue forward pedalling you can feel the hub struggling to engage.
solutions?

Pawls in the freehub not engaging - how old? If old and not serviced then pawls could be worn, or springs etc - or crud in mechanism?

no, relatively new.... six months and only light use.... as in very light use.
