Lost my father and father in law through cancer in the last few months and want to do something for cancer research uk next year. Was going to do lands end to john o groats (6 days ish) but would rather do something off road. Any suggestions ? don't mind bivvying etc.
Coast to coast of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
lands end to John o groats, all off road.
3 Peaks, done as Snowdon, Skiddaw and Ben Nevis? Although apparently Scarfell Pike has been done before on bikes with the National Park and landowners blessing. 3000m of climbing in a day would be a lot for the UK.
All of the 7 Stanes.
Check out Rob Lee's blog for inspiration - he did em in a day...
Was he the guy on the Find DVD with Colin Forth? That was mental.Check out Rob Lee's blog for inspiration
South downs way in one go?
This, http://www.davebuchanan.co.uk/ maybe bivvying along the way, wouldn't recommend trying to do it non stop 😯 😀
Check out what Dave Buchanan did, the Welsh Coast to Coast, there and back again. One way is hard enough, but if you feel mentally (first and foremost) and physically tough enough - give it a go.
Dave is himself a Cancer survivor, and raised over £3000 for CLIC Saergant.
[EDIT: Damn you, LoCo.]
The Dave Buchanan both ways looks good, am looking for something that is a real challenge over a few days, 3 of us doing it with about 10 months to train.
Haha Rickon, you're too slow young lad 😛
Spocker 52 hours non stop, mind
Three of the team rode it one way as a 3-day ride, so doing it over 6 days there and back would be a good aim.
It's a tough old ride, which requires good navigation skill and takes in some really wonderful scenary and riding.
Send me an email and I'll see if I can sort you out some additional info.
South downs way in one go?
Daisy-Duke did it both ways in 25 hours! (7 punctures and a big off in the dark put paid to a sub 24hr effort)
He is my hero.....
Good luck with whatever you do.
mail sent rickon, cheers
South Downs Way double... I'm planning on doing it next year for CRUK also.
SDW Triple? (The Double's just getting too easy now 🙂 )
North and South Downs?
NDW: Dover - Guildford via Canterbury
Downlink Way: Guildford - Shoreham
SDW: Shoreham - Eastbourne
EDIT - Not really ultimate - but nice off road ride.
I've heard a whisper today of a UK route which will be approx' 1000 miles, 90% off road and 80% waymarked. I'm not in a position to say anymore but that should make for a real challange ... just keep your eyes and ears open.
you're such a tease...
Helvellyn, Skiddaw and Scafell in a day? I'm sure big Gary Tompsett did this years ago for a now defunct mountain bike mag. It would be a real challenge but I'd sponsor you. Sorry to hear about your father and father in law.
I guess the key is to come up with something that is a challenge that your mates who sponsor you can get a real sense of "wow, that's a big undertaking" without it being unmanageable.
Re the three peaks. Brant did that for MTB Pro if memory serves many years ago. I'll have those two issues somewhere as well.Riding between them over, say, 8 - 10 days, would be a reasonable proposition.
Good luck and let us know what you decide to do. 😀
