Been playing with building a commuting/street bike based around an old scott frame etc. Haven't had a puncture all year whilst commuting since going tubeless on my MTBs so what can i do to prevent punctures when using skinny road tyres, maybe even on 700c wheelsets?

Used to use slime tubes but the latex solidified at the bottom of the tubes as I don't ride that bike regularly. They were also a pig when topping up pressure as the gunk would block the valve.

Now use slime tape which is light, effective and comes in various sizes.
No punctures yet......

Armoured tyres. I run some schwalb things. Look for ones with puncture strips.

punctures? i use a road bike with normal 23mm slicks, occasionally doing a bit of singletrack or a farm lane and very rarely get a puncture. Last time was last winter when the tyre de-laminated (i hadn't realised the tread was as badly worn as it was)

mrmo things are a bit different for commuters. I rarely get punctures on my road bike but on my commuter things are different - I think every puncture I've had commuting has been caused by glass.

Tried slime tubes and not been very pleased with them at all, tried lots of different tyres - bonty hardcase, michelin krylion carbon (which were okay for the first 1000ish miles but I had to take the rear off last week after the sidewall split), running conti gp4000 at the moment so I'll see how they do. They do seem to resist cutting very well.

Been thinking about fitting the anti puncture strip above, was it a pain to fit?

I use 23mm Continental GP4 Season, things are to keep the pressures high (90 front 95 rear) and check them for bits every month picking out pieces of glass etc and supergluing up the cuts. You can easily get 5,000 miles out of a pair without any problems.

I've converted my Tricross to stans. used a normal MTB rim strim, it's not that much of a stretch. 50psi seems to work with 210 lbs rider and two panniers. Running Specialized Borough 32mm tyres.

Marathon Plus - Schwalbe, i live in glasgow and can cycle over billions of shards of bucky bottle glass with no issue. Slightly expensive but after a day of 9 punctures on pancracers they are worth twice their weight in gold!

another voter for GP 4 seasons here.. cycle 20 miles each way to work, 3 times a week and never had a puncture using them.

as others have said, the biggest puncture issue is with glass or thorns - but that's only so long as you ride (as I do) primarily through country/towns/villages.

if you commute through dense in urban/city/industrial environments, then you also have to contend with nails/sharp metal objects etc.. and then Schwalbe Marathon Plus seem to be the best advise.
