Hi All,

I have just had my frame, rockers and swingarm stripped ready to repaint but wanted some advice on paints as I want a durable finish that looks half decent.

Has anyone had any success with hammerite? Is it worth priming and lacquering?

Any advice would be apreicated,

Cheers,

Tom

Home painting i presume??

Good looking, smooth lovely paintjob, which chipps off in seconds.
Durable rugged looking, rough and ready done by a child look.

Choose one only.

Halfords acrylic spray paints are good - however to get a decent finish takes a lot of work and will cost as much in materials as a pro job

Get it powder coated is what I would do having done the spray can thing

You have to prime for conventional paint

Hammetite looks utter gash, smoothrite or plasitkote is acceptable

I would powder coat but the only place cheap enough around my way only powdercoats steel and speaking to the guy the oven temps are way to high for Ali frames, he has done a few ali parts before but couldn't garantee it would be sraight afterwards!

Powder coat! They bake at 180c, way below melting point of ali! I have had frames power coated before and never any probs! Aerosols would be rubbish! If you don't wand to powder coat then go to your local car paint shop/garage and get them to do it! I would say £50 plus material and a far better job that aerosols.
This has just been powder coated!

Where do you guys get your powder coating done? Like I said the guys near me only do steel and won't turn there ovens down to anyway near to what I would consider safe! 180 will still have any effect on your frame, I would need to go to a place that you guys have had experience with to give me some confidence, what sort of price for prepping and coating?

I have finished a few parts with spray cans and was happy with the finish but have never had to do anything that is going to get abused.

Just take it to our local car body shop bung the sprayer a good drink and job done. 2 pack is pretty sturdy once it's cured and you can have pretty much any colour you can think of.

Thanks, it seems car bodyshop is the way to go with 2 pack. Any chance anyone knows anywhere near the Hinckley (Leicestershire) area, I'm new to the area and haven't got any contacts in that industry!

Get in touch with European car paints in Leicester and they will recommend you a small independant local bodyshop! You can also get your etch primer, chose your basecoat colour and 2k lacquer for the job from the shop and just pay the painter for his time/labour!
I hope this helps! If you were further north I could have helped more!
