Do you run a spacer on the non-drive side (as per the instructions?)
I've found that if I do so, then the HTII bearing preload cap doesn't have much thread to 'grab onto' so my crank comes loose?
Any reason why I shouldn't just not bother with a spacer on the LH side?
The other option is to get the granny ring mounts ground down, so I only have to run one spacer on the driveside...
cheers 🙂

I don't think you have to do that on the later ones. Quickest way to do the job is with a hacksaw rather than grinding them.

Mine's fairly recent (bought last year). Definitely need the two spacers on the driveside so the granny tabs clear the BB shell.
Cheers for the pics, I don't have nay tools so will probably get a local metal shop to do the mod for me, shall suggest your method as it looks neat 🙂
If pushed you can do the job with a Tesco hacksaw 🙂
Had a long exchange with Eric at FC - non-drive side is optional, so you don't need to grind down the chainset (mine was a 2009 EBB - earlier versions might differ I guess).
Those pictures show bodging at really quite an advanced level. Vice and new hacksaw blade anyone?!!

Vice came from a bike shop that opened in 1890s and probably original equipment - got it 40 years ago when it closed down 🙂
Wasn't going to waste a new hacksaw blade on alloy. Those Shimano cranks are pretty soft anyway.

I had the same issue as the OP regarding the non-drive side spacer.
I tried it with two spacers on the drive side and none on the other: the crank arms seem to be equi-distant from the chainstays so I don't see the need for the non-drive side spacer. It's been like that for a year or so now without issue. Plus there's no need to trim the granny mounts with this set up, if it's the more recent version (not sure when they changed the design).
