I'm swapping out some forks.
In the past, my special move was to unscrew top cap, take off the stem and then have the forks painfully drop out of the frame onto my gout filled toes. Every time.
Except yesterday. Top cap off, stem off and despite the fork turning slightly stiffly they stay in and toes remain unbruised.

I assume some part of the headset has stuck to the steerer so I have given the steerer a firm tap without success.
Am I fairly safe walloping the top of the steerer with a bit of timber or is there a sensible solution to this dilema?
Thanks in advance.
