don't need a map on the screen but prefer it to give easy to relate coordinates (both here and in France + maybe other bordering countries .what do people recommend ?

Cheapest option is to get a secondhand Garmin eTrex or etrex Legend. Personally I'd recommend paying out a bit more for a Legend Hcx - mainly because it has a memory card slot.
On all of these you can easily set the grid to 'UTM' for use with French maps.

I have a Geko 301 and it's served me well these last few years. It'll do all you want, is light, and has easily-changed AAA batteries. Make sure you get a cable. If your PC doesn't have a serial port, you'll also need a USB-Serial adapter (about £6 on ebay).
