Going to Malaga and the closest flight to me is with FlyBe. They're saying that bikes cannot be booked and can only be taken on a standby basis, if the hold is full then they won't guarantee that you'll get your bike on. Anyone have any real experience of this and did you get your bike turned away ?

I think they use small planes. You can check which type (probably in the booking somewhere?). Same problem with skis, plus they specify a maximum length which rules out a significant portion of adult sized skis.

phone up their help line to give then advanced notice, thats what I've done
I've flown FlyBe with my bike a few times, Southampton-Manchester and back and Glasgow-Southampton, will be doing it again in June after the ThreePeaksYachtRace

Each time I've just used a cardboard bike box from the LBS
no problems at all

I couldnt possibly comment on anything to do with Fly'may'be. The second worst experience of an airline next to BMI baby, and I have flew with alot of airlines. I have flew with them a good few times, and 50% of the time the flight is late, cancelled or overbooked.

As for your bike, if they are quoting this, it worth taking the risk? Is it maybe cheaper to hire a bike, bike carriage can be very expensive? I know this is what I'll be doing next year when I go to the Alps.
