I need new shoes and use flat pedals .

What shoes are good on flat pedals and have a bit of grip on foot ? Most shoes seems to be designed for very good riders who never have to get off the bike ?
Some trails round here are very technical and I need to walk down rocky and loose fixtures .

Forget to add that I normally use trail running shoes but find them not rigid enough on my new pedals ;

Fiveten impact or free rider.

There is no better flat pedal shoe on the market than a Fiveten. You can walk in them no problem too.

Something like the O'Neal Traverse - designed for a bit of walking.

Five Tens seem to be the shoe of choice. They have various options. I have some basic Freeriders and they are ace, buy half a size up or even a full size if you plan to wear thick winter socks.

I also have a pair of Lake MXZ200 boots which are awesome but very spendy.

My specialized shoes have a big deal made about the fact you can wear them in a pub.
I'd rather be able to walk up a muddy gentle incline.

I would suggest 5Ten as the first choice. But Specialized have just released a flat shoe for walking in as well.

To be honest, if you’re not planning on going particularly fast then you can get Specialized, Shimano, O’neal, etc in whatever price range you want to spend

My go to summer mountain bike shoe is the five tennie which is a bouldering shoe, grip with Dmr vaults is perfect, they are plenty stiff enough and they are good for walking up wet woodland / moorland or lakes mountains.. not for everyone

I've a set of the new crank brothers (boa version). Good grip but not too much grip. Have vaude moans before. There were also good in use but the uppers started to come apart on the toe box.

FiveTen Freeriders are the best I've used. Get the Freerider Pro if you're feeling fancy- I haven't used mine for long enough to say how much better they are than ordinary Freeriders, though!

I love my freeriders (not pros, the original ones), though they lack mud grip for off the bike- good for anything else on and off though.

Giro jackets are good. Steer away from jacket 2s. Ion are the best I have ever used

Specialized Rime Flat - designed for walking in, and the new soles are supposed to be on par with five ten. I'm going for a set for the winter.

Pretty much same here but mine are the standard Adidas version, the Swift Solo (they were the original).

I have the Giros and Freeriders
but only use the Giros for less technical stuff as they don't stick to the pedals as well as Fivetens. They do however dry out in less than a week.

The truth is that many others have now caught up with Five Ten who have ruled the flat pedal shoe market for many years .Freerider Pros are way better than regular Freeriders . They dry out quickly , they are grippier on the bike , noticeably lighter , even the laces are better . Bontrager Flat Line shoes have virtually the same level of grip in a better made shoe ( IME )

i do love the obsession with the makers of flat pedal shoes for them to not stand out in the pub.

i have freerider pro, but was looking at the specialized rime in a shop just the other day. they looked bulky for a riding shoe, but i’d probably give them a go if i were looking for a shoe for walking and riding

Always had five tens, just bought a pair of spesh 2fo roosts and they are equally grippy if not maybe more grippy and fine to walk in and look like a normalish shoe/trainer thing.

I've got a couple of pairs.

Shimano GR7s aren't bad for walking in, they are surprisingly grippy despite the flat pedal sole.

I've also got a pair of Mavic Deemax, they aren't as grippy as the Shimano shoes but they are super comfy, they are actually made my Salomon and have the same insole.

If I had to scramble up a slope carrying a bike I'd rather have the Shimanos on, but if I had to wear a pair of flat pedal shoes all day I'd rather have the Mavics

Have a look at Ride Concepts too...  Very pleased with my Hellion Elites.

I tend to just go for a normal waterproof approach shoe and cut some of the lugs off the centre of the sole to create a flat area to rest on the pedal. Having a little step in the sole at the heel helps lock in the pedal, too.

Most of the dedicated mtb flat pedal shoes I've seen are hopeless if you have to push up anything slippy, like wet grass.

+1
I have a pair of flatlines which are still going strong after three years. Had never managed much beyond a year from freeriders before.

Also have a pair of Ion scrub amp which are fantastic. Not quite as sticky as the Bontrager or Five Ten soles but equally good once you accept that they are different.

Vaude Moab are very good in bad conditions and in my experience last extremely well. Walking in them while on the bike honestly doesn't feel very different to walking boots.
