My eight year old is progressing to steep tech. He has a nice little 24" Trek that I fixed up out of a couple of donor bikes...except the forks shit, but that's for another thread.
The pedals are still the lightweight plastic rubbish and not at all good in wet conditions.

I'm not too keen on spending too much, but keen to upgrade (and of course his younger brother will need a set too) so are there any recommendations on flats that are good for kids, not too pricey and have a good compromise between grip and shin-shattering?

My middle child has chromag radar youth pedals but they seem to be costing a fortune. I've noticed the cost of pedals going up recently. They are 70mm x 93mm so not a bad size for small feet. Kids have also used saint pedals too as they are relatively small

There was a good thread on here last week about kids pedals.

I picked up these for my two ( 8 and 10) last week: https://www.planetx.co.uk/i/q/PEWELR146/wellgo-r146-pedals
They are really nice and compact

Another vote for Wellgo r146 - my son used some Giant-branded versions of them when he was younger and they were excellent. He's since moved on to racing and SPDs and trying to get him back onto flats is proving challenging, to say the least!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/361206280315 (scratch that, out of stock on tthe decent ones)

Also search Rock Brothers for slightly pricier but they’re decent copies. My kid has has some for a year or so on his hardtail.

We use these. Had a set on a 16" belter, and just got a new set for a 20" bike

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MTB-Road-Bike-Platform-Aluminum-Alloy-Hollow-Out-4-Sealed-Bearings-Pedals-KC01/173608213632?pageci=68927482-d6e5-4a1f-8024-1c802cb3d5e5

They are a bit smaller than normal, so ground alot less, they have good grip & are (IMO) well priced.

The SDG Slater pedals are absolutely epic. My six year old daughter has a Hellion that came with what looked like pretty good pedals. She carries a surprising amount of pace on the bike over rough stuff and spent a lot of time coming off the pedals, which was really frustrating for her. Switched to the SDG and I can’t recall it happening again and we pretty much hit the trails every day, she loves them. 🙂

Turns out I had some Xped flats in the shed I've been swapping onto my bikes when my wife occasionally rides with us. I'd thought they'd be too big, but we tried them out on a single-track session this morning and he loves them.

...now have to get some replacements for my wife (pedals that is)

I bought my son some DMR V6 and kids 510’s which both work very well together.

V12 you can put longer terror pins in if required
Usually on same somewhere... nice and small but I can squeeze my size 8 on if needed. Nearly always on sale somewhere.

Turns out I had some Xped flats in the shed I’ve been swapping onto my bikes when my wife

    occasionally

rides with us.

XPED

I've had 2 pairs of these doing stellar service, one on my son's bike and the other on my wife's, for 2 quid you can't go wrong!

+1 for the SDG slater pedals, very good scaled down platforms for kids, made a huge difference to my 6 year old on his bike.

Anyone used the sdg slater junior upgrade kit ? The bars on my sons frog 55 are to narrow. And pedals are poor.
