I've got them - they are nice and comfy and grippy but the edges started to come away on the soles pretty quickly. They've not really got any worse since then though and are otherwise fine. I will glue em back together at some point.

moving my feet around on the pedals is very important to me. grippy shoes are not my thing

I have them in my usual size, but they are nicely snug with thin socks. Couldn't wear thick socks or sealskins, but nor do I need to, they are chuffing warm!

Mine are holding together ok after a few months use. They're my first flat shoe after years of SPDs and from a riding perspective, they're super sticky and great!

Had a pair since August. Mine are doing the peely off edge thing, which is apparently a warranty thing, just not sure if I can be arsed to go back through the JE James return department.

They're a bit flexier than Impacts, have a "proper" tongue, unlike the single sided one on the Impacts which always rubbed the top of my foot raw, and don't look near as special needs. Not so much protection round the outside of your foot though, if you're into booting roots and rocks while you ride.

I find 5:10 sizing a bit baggy - I'm usually a 43, but my old Impacts needed proper thick socks to be comfy. I got the Freeriders in a 42 and they're spot on.

I posted this on another thread about 3 months ago..
All I would add to that is that the edges on mine have also started to come away a little. Will have to check out if they can be sorted on warranty. Apart from that, still lovin them!

"I got some 5:10 Freeriders a coupe of weeks ago, until then I have always worn skate shoes normally Vans, but last pair were the Nike Morgan. The Nikes were pretty grippy and had quite flexible soles which I like and it seemed to help with the grip. I had tried a pair of the 5:10s on but they felt quite stiff - wasn't sure if I got on with them.
But I started to get some foot pain using the Nikes especially when riding DH, and they had started to wear through on the soles so I decided to give the Freeriders a go.

Really, really impressed with them, they are a bit stiffer than skate shoes but the grip is awesome. I can’t compare them to the impacts, but quite surprised how much more grip they had compared to the Nikes (half expected them to be a bit of a let down after all the hype!) Plus no more foot pain and the toe area is much tougher than standard skate shoes which should give a bit more protection. Only downside is re-positioning your feet correctly, it isn’t easy without lifting your weight off the pedal. I’m currently using DMR V12s with a couple of the longer pins on each side, might stick the standard pins back in as they just wear the shoes quicker, and prob aren’t needed with the 5:10s, and should make it a bit easier to move around on them.
Haven't had them long enough to say if they will last, but Feet First will re-sole them for about £35"

I have a pair of freeriders and a pair of impact 2s. I bought both pairs a half size bigger than normal to accomodate thick winter socks, this has worked out well and my sealskinz fit in them fine.

The freerider is not quite as stiff as the impact 2, it lacks the all round beef and strong toebox, but the grip available is still phenomenal, they are stiff enough for DH duties and they dry quicker than impact 2s.

For most riding I wear the freeriders but for particularly shitty DH sessions the impact 2s make me feel more confident.

Had mine since May last year. Brilliant grip, very comfortable, plenty of support, look good - couldn't ask for anything more. The rand has come unstuck in places, but my LBS is sorting this out under warranty when they get new season stock in

How do the FiveTens compare against the Shimano AM40s? I really fancy a pair of the Shimanos.

not used 5 tens but hte am40 is definitely grippier than a nike 6.0

the am40 has a stiffer rubber vibram sole and it is ripping up a bit but i`m running quite long pins which probably doesnt help.

firestarter......

i too am a nine, but the 6.0 come up a bit small. the sizing label has come off my curretn 6.0's and i'm not sure exactly what size they are nor can i remember what size they were when i bought them.

i've just been to a few local (to me) shops and found out that i'm 8/8.5. to make it wosre the GF has just bought the same style shoe in purple/red. i'm jealous.

they can be found at Size.

alpin, forgot to add in my post that I normally take a 9 in shoes, but went for a 44 in the Freerider so I could just get 2 pairs of socks plus Sealskinz in them for winter while still being fine for one pair in summer.

never felt the need for super tacky soles. Like to move around on the pedals too. Never tried them though.

Actually does anyone know if the black gray is in stock anywhere at 5 and 5.5 sizes? CRC is the only place I have found small sizes but only available for the other two colours.

I have a pair of Basics, which are similiar to the Freerider, same sole. Wouldn't buy another pair, the stickyness is overrated (nice for when you're pushing your comfort zones, or dog tired, but otherwise when was the last time your feet slipped off the pedal and it wasn't because you did something daft?) and the build quality is pretty shoddy. Also, the outer "sticky" sole is seperating away from the main sole, which is pretty poor.

Put it this way... The other pair of shoes I ride in are an ancient banged up pair of Vans. I wore them as everyday shoes for a couple of years till they started looking really shoddy, then retired them to be bike shoes. Now, despite being pretty worn out when I started riding in them, they've covered probably 2-3 times as many miles as my 5.10s, but they'll still be going after the 5.10s fall apart. And in practice, for most riding they suit me exactly as well.

But, on McMoab or the downhill at fort william I was glad for it, just for the confidence boost when I was running out of ability 😉

I am using an old pair of Nike's but they have a fairly hard sole so they are slipping from the pedal all the time no matter what I do 🙁

the men's colour-ways are dull and boring in comparison. and i didn't realise they were for ladies until i read it. oh, and i'm almost as colour blind as a dog.

get in-touch with your feminine side..... and if your bike is purple and gold

[img] [/img]

and you helmet looks like something from the 80's

[img] [/img]

your footwear needs to match....

jedi, i know what you mean... the 6.0 aren't tacky like 5:10s. the pair i have at the moment provide plenty of grip on Wellgo MAG-1's.

think there're popular in the BMX/skate world.

I've got the impacts hi and really impressed. I used to get bounced off my pedals with vans, but not with the five tens. Think I'm going to get these for summer, same S1 steatlth rubber as impacts.

the GF new footwear....

[img] [/img]

bargin at 40€.... i don't know why but nice, funky footwear seems to be either non-existant or really expensive when it does. those i'm looking at (and have justr ordered from NikeStore (firestarter!!!!)) are 55£ in the UK or 80€ in germany. the exchange rate isn't that bad!
