Got some lovely new Diadora road shoes and matching SPD-SL pedals for Xmas 🙂 to replace the MTB pedals/shoes ive been using.
Thing is, ive never used this system before and I'm confused - are the cleats supposed to extend outside of the shoe sole?
The cleats are wider than the shoes and the 'wings' of the cleats stick out..

Yes, that is normal. There should be markings on the soles of he shoes, as a starting point I normally fit the cleats centrally (side to side) and as far back as I can fit them front to back. This usually puts the cleat under the ball of my foot. I then tweak the position from there. There will be cleat fitting guides on you tube.

Cheers! Found the fitting marks on the shoes, just seemed odd that the cleats extend so far laterally.

more support, big cleat, big pedal, no hotspots*

*some notice, some don't, before anyone argues.

If you have been using spd's or similar try and match the cleat position as a starting point, if not, might be worth sitting on a table let your legs hang loose, then look at how your feet rest. Then try and replicate this with the cleats. Whatever you do be prepared to fiddle a little.

Having real trouble getting the cleats to engage with the pedals, think the spring is very stiff. Got the shoes into the pedals by hand so I'm leaving them there for today - time to go for my Xmas dinner!

The cleats are almost impossible to put in and extract unless attached to the shoes. when on the end of your legs it will prove much easier.

Even with the shoes on its almost impossible to get them to engage!
Tension is set to minimum as well, don't know why it wont happen.

they are stiff, last thing you want is your feet coming out at the wrong moment.

They'll loosen fast enough. I swap pedals , shoes and cleats all the time and it doesn't take long for them to lose their initial tightness

Muddy, I know from previous posts that you are likely to have funny shaped feet... What size feet are you?

The reason I ask is that I have some fancy-dan Bont shoes, the heat mouldable ones, which you can have for nowt because I don't get on with them at all.

Ooh, and as for cleat fitting, I put mine as far inboard as possible, and as far forward as possible, then twist the right one to let my toes point out.

I'm a 39 or thereabouts so i doubt they will fit me - but ta for the offer:)
the cleats are really hard to engage in the pedals but I'm sure they will slacken off with use. Plastic cleats are really odd coming from two bolt MTB style metal cleats, how long do they last?

These are a 42, but the main reason they don't work for me is the high (to me...) arch, which might be more up your street.

If you want them, shout up; they've been in the cupboard for 12 months.

The engagement is different to mountain bike pedals; stamp on, and SPD-SL cleats last forever, the yellow bits wear out, but that is nothing to do with the pedal/cleat/binding mech.

Too big for me I'm afraid, even in 39's my toes don't reach the end of the shoe but any smaller and my arches don't fit/too narrow.
Thanks for the kind offer though.
