[Closed] Fitting a SS road wheel to a track bike for turbo duties

I was wondering (as I'm shit on rollers and banned from using them in the hose due to crashing into the wall) would it be viable to space a SS cog onto an old road wheel I have and slot it into the back of my track bike for turbo duties?

That way I'd have a free wheel and the QR skewer fits into the turbo nicely too.

From what I can see it's a normal road width track end of the back, would the QR axle fit ok?

I don't have a road bike anymore you see.

If it's a track bike it'll be 120mm OLN whereas the road wheel will be 130mm.

QR will fit/work fine (I've got a QR on my slot dropout inbred), but you might want chaintugs to stop it from slipping unless its tucked right into the back of the dropout. That said, unless you're really mashing on the turbo it should be fine if you do it up nice and tight.

Double check your track frame has 130mm rear spacing though ('true' track frames are 120mm, and some are 135mm).

Good point on the spacing, I was wondering about the tug situation.

It's definately a true track frame for sure

if you have a flip-flop hub one side COULD be a "free". meaning that you can get a BMX free hub and plop that on the existing wheel.
if its fixed/fixed then no
if its single-sided then no.

It's got threads on both sides, but I don't want to run with the track tyres on the turbo and you're not allowed an additional cog on the hub at Manchester and I CBA'd to take it on and off every time I want to get on the turbo

Build something on a cheapo flip flop hub, I matched up the hole count on an old rim with one from Planet-X. Paid about £12 for it or something silly, no dishing etc. so really easy to do.

BMX freewheel and Tacx axle nuts to use with the turbo.

SS track and road is 120mm. Why can't you ride fixed on your trainer - it's quite popular I believe 😉

Or just get another wheel.

Not sure how you're gonna get round the difference in OLN length...

Along with picking up a cheap track wheel from eBay this looks like only option for a 120 OLN frame as you won't get a quick release axled 120 hub very easily. It doesn't need to be freewheel specific as a freewheel will fit on the track cog threads

Free wheel has the same threads as a fixed cog its the lock ring that differs. Freewheels fit and work absolutely fine on fixed threads.

Have you checked it doesnt fit in the turbaas is?

You could get something tapered to screw on the end if you have the threads?

Then file some flats in. They only need to be snug to support the axle and the wheel will be held firm as is.
