Just bought the spare assembly for a xt rear mech. Has anybody got any fitting advice as it seems a real bastard to load the spring at the same
time as trying to put the horse-shoe clip on...I'm falling at the moment

stick a screwdriver between the bolt and the b adjuster screw and turn the plate.
I can put them on with just my hands most of the time.

I usually put a 5mm key vertically in the vice, and fit the mech pivot bolt onto that so it acts as a third hand, hold the plate in place with pliers, and rotate the mech to tension the spring. It's a touch fiddly, having to move the cage and plate at certain points for clearance, and remember to have the retaining clip within reach, or you'll have to let it all go while you fetch it.
