Getting well and truly pee'd off now.

Ordered a used niner frame from eBay. I've replaced the headset bearings and bottom bracket with a praxis one. despite it having been advertised with a bb convertor that worked perfectly. That's fine... however it didn't have the right sized lower headset cup bearing installe and I've only realised that now I've fitted the new one. 51.8mm fitted, needs 52mm. Minor but I need to order another!

Roval hubs on the wheels I bought for it are not compatible with the niner fork so I've had to bodge it with a 1.8mm spacer in the 100mm axle gap.

Fitted an GX eagle drivetrain. Only for some reason due to the design of the 135mm back end a 36t chainring that is non-boost fouls the chainstay so I have 2 choices... if I run a non boost ring I have to either run a 34t to clear the chainstay and compromise top end speed or run a 36t boost ring and run a pants chainline.

The wheels needed rim tape re-doing for the tubeless as it was a mess, minor but another annoyance and an hour scrubbing rims!

Took it for a spin last night, and it feels slower than my on-one whippet I've replaced. Feels like there is drag in the drivetrain, possibly being caused by the chainline on the narrow wide. Also a Rock Razor is definitely more draggy that a rocket ron.

Might just be I've only been on my road bike for the last 3 weeks but if it is slower I will cry!

FFS I hate building bikes!!!!

On a plus side I've built a fully carbon bike with carbon pretty much everything and 1x12 for about £1500. Need to get over the teething issues!

Think you need to change your display name 🙂

Sorry mate, happens to us all sometimes. Starting a build and finding I forgot to get valves/rim tape/headset spacers/wheels is what usually happens to me.

Re: Drive chain- I'd take to the bike shop and get them to look at it.

Hmmm. I would go 34t as you have a 10t at the other end. Get a lower headset bearing from somewhere like simply bearings. I've just replaced some and they were free delivery. Turned up the next day too.

This thread should be posted up every time there's a thread asking for new bike recommendations and someone suggests second hand.

Why would you need a higher gear than 34t / 10t unless you are doing a lot of tarmac riding?

I'm on a 30t/10t setup as highest gear and I rarely use it - if im going that fast off-road im rarely trying to pedal.

Oh for the days of simple standards - 1 1/8th headsets / 9mm QR front and rear / screw in cartridge bb's etc!

I've just built up a slightly retro alloy hardtail and it feels very rapid and lively compared to my full suss bike. No idea what it weighs, but significantly less than the FS. Would have been annoyed if it had felt sluggish (although compared to the road bike it does).

I'm perfectly happy with the 32/10 top-end speed on a 29er, 34 would probably be more than enough.

Because I regularly average 15mph on my xc rides. This is an out and out fast bike, with a rigid fork. I've got a "big bike" for slower sharper peak district type stuff

34/10 will give you 26.5mph at a cadence of 90rpm. 36/10 gives you 28mph. How fast are you going??

Wrong headset cup bearing, fork doesn't fit the standard 15x100 hub even though it's very standard, even for specialized...

Call me a pessimist but this doesn't sound like a standards rant (especially if they came from the same seller) I'm thinking it's been damaged, headset cup flared slightly fork bent.

Last ride hit 34mph according to garmin, pedalling out with a 39 ring (2x) against some friends. That was on the previous bike.

Nope, the headset bearing is very very close. 51.8 angle bearing compared to 52mm... I think the previous owner had probably ran the wrong one for years. they told me it needed changing and I just ordered the one that was in there. Having read the Niner Encyclopedia it needs a 52mm ideally.

The wheels came from a different seller and googling the problem it is well documented. Roval and Niner need a spacer making up to make them work. I posted about it on here and I'm not the first person to experience it. It's to do with a wide and high flange on the hub and a bulge in the fork leg.

My shaft wasn’t long enough for my new frame, luckily my LBS was able to tease out an extra inch so now it fits nicely in the bottom bracket.
