Being new to this fancy modern stuff, I've recently taken ownership of a rather nice Sanderson off here... Trouble is, the rear (2008 XT) discs are s**t. Had them bled by the local LBS but still crap. Plenty of pad, discs are 160mm and solvent degreased. Thought they should lock up with your little finger but no... S**t, what should I be looking at to improve bar Evilbay sales and a new purchase off here ???
New pads.
Pads might be glazed or contaminated. Take them out and sand them, if they are still poor then put new ones in.
new pads, clean the disc thoroughly. bed in properly
2008 xt should be more than adequate if working properly. contaminated pads is the most likely explanation why they are notI would have though
What solvent have you degreased the rotors with? Unless it's IPA or meths based then chances are you pads are contaminated. Sounds like new pads would cure it.
You wont get them to lock up with just your little finger.
Solvent used is Loctite Activator used to degrease parts before applying adhesive etc. Reckon new pads is the key by the sound of it ?
Surrounded by Zulus - Just a general term (mind you, my old Avid Ultimate vees would)
Loctite activator? Interesting choice.
Fit new pads, she'll be as good as new.
Try using a good glass paper on the pads before replacing, it may work & you've nothing to lose
Another vote for either sandpaper the pads a bit, or new ones. I find that methylated spirit works well for cleaning discs, bought some proper disc brake degreaser stuff and it does no better a job of it.
There is absolutely no need to ever clean disc rotors unless you put grease/oil on them somehow. If anything, using solvent on them under normal circumstances will degrade performance as you will remove any adhered pad material.
If they are performing poorly, new pads (properly bedded in) will most likely fix them.
Well you say that glenh but I cleaned mine today and all manner or gooey muck came off and I'm sure it wasn't all deposited pad. Might be wrong though.
Can't speak for using meths, but a big black can of brake cleaner should do the trick - does for me ...
I'd say chuck in a new set of sintered pads & make sure they're bedded in properly. If you've the same brake on the fron then chuck the new pads in that end to break them in. At least half a dozen real high speed stops to get them nice & hot. Then chuck them back in the rear & it should be fine.
