Cotics full builds would be a good place to start looking

If your on a budget, check out he classifieds on here and on pinkbike, but be careful who and which method you use. If not on a budget, merlin for most of your needs, wheels, drivetrain etc. then your own choice of finishing kit.

For forks, x fusion are getting great reviews, and are a lot cheaper than their competitors.

Best of luck, building you first proper bike is a joy, bloody frustrating at times too!.

I don't really have a budget tbh but don't want to go overboard and spend loads. I will be mainly buying off the classifieds

Hope Hoops with Crest rims are good for the price.
Shimano Deore brakes are brilliant - no point in paying any more.
Hope BBs are good but XT is fine and much cheaper.
Check prices on http://bikediscount.de/ before buying from classifieds!

- Reba fork
- Hope Hoops on your choice of Stan's rim
- SLX or XT groupset (I've got unused shifters and brakes if they're of interest)
- some reasonable finishing kit

Done.

Check out merlin for groupsets. Full Slx with disks is about £350 atm

hey njee20 - if the OP isn't interested in the shifters I could be - either 9spd or 10 spd is fine as i have one full build and one commuter bike to do

OP should have dibs though as this is his thread 🙂

OP - I've found shimano stuff easier to work with when learning, especially brakes.
Merlin have some good deals on drivetrains and this could be a good shout for you

there's a triple for the same price

You're welcome to check out my latest Cotic custom build, all parts were selected carefully. The flat pedals that the bike has on the pictures are Shimano Saint MX80, but the bike will also be used with SPD pedals - depending on riders choice (I prefer SPD all time!). This is our rental bike. 🙂 Here's a link to full parts list: http://www.vitalmtb.com/community/Hillside-Cycling,26127/setup,24730

There are some real bargains on group sets and forks knocking around right now. Merlin is a good place to start...

I'd get new deore brakes and gears, used cranks (any xc cranks really), used revelation or reba forks, used wheels (Hope, any decent rims), wide bars/stem/pedals/saddle from classifieds, a good used reverb post. Might be in the region of £800-ish for the bits? Everything's possible on a tighter budget though.
