I would like to propose the ‘Holiday Hundred’ for those amongst us who are time crunched or just plain lacking the mojo but would still like to get a reasonable amount of riding in. Anyone else in?
i did make a start, with 2 short rides.
fingers crossed i can gain some momentum.
Only managed 30.7km on my first Zwift ride, just nothing in the legs and it was at the end of a busy day. Still, made a start.

Sounds good to me. I'll pretty easily pass the hundred mark (km and miles) but it'll be a nice mid target to aim for.

or from another perspective........... how ****ing sad are the people or person who would create something just to be 'anti'.
happy festive 500 to all those having a go like me.
Quick 30km this morning in between stocking openings (for the kids) and then the full presents stuff later once in-laws etc arrive for lunch.
Normally I try to avoid riding on Christmas Day cos the driving standards are usually woeful but the roads around where my sister lives are super quiet anyway. Saw about 6 cars, a couple of runners, one other cyclist and a few people out dog walking. Lovely morning, just peaceful.
I'm tempted to do the same route again but in reverse later tonight.
Which was kind of needed after 2 hyper kids unloaded their stockings over the living room floor!
@ton That wouldn't encourage me to join one of their events. A massive own goal really.
I didn't dare try to negotiate any time on the turbo today, even though we're in that lull between presents and visitors. If I'd planned it right I could have gotten a wee spin in but am watching the Bottom Christmas special with a beer instead 😎
Am feeling sufficiently motivated for 80-90km gravel tomorrow, there's a wee bit of snow forecast so could be very scenic.
Actually managing 500km is already likely to be out of the window but I should break 5000km for the year which will have to do 😂
Day2 - second bike. Quick 40k for me this morning before the kids got up and before the rain came in. Legs are still tired from yesterday.
I’m tempted to do the same route again but in reverse later tonight.
Update: Unable to move. Also, trying to balance is not a good idea...
Just a quick pootle to add to yesterdays longer ride.
Total is now 135km.
Who would have thought clouds of papery winged flies would be a hazard on the 25th December?
Anyway, I saw a wild otter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Nice otter spot.
I made it 100 meters this morning before sense prevailed. Could barely stand up. Black ice means a no go today.
Be careful out there folks.
Anyway, I saw a wild otter
Where was that? I guess that disproves any notion that Otters were migratory 😂
Really torn today, should probably have a diagnostic turbo session to work through back pain issues rather than risk icy roads, but distant snowy hills look stunning, I could pedal out to the snowline and back before lunch...
Another 80k for me this morning, but endurance is waning. My feet were bloody frozen!
65km this morning. I'd planned on 80 but the headwind just turned a lot of the ride into a total slog. One of those days where it looks nice, no branches moving - you get out there and there is a constant unrelenting push against you. Like riding through treacle.
Takes me to 204km total.
Just knocked off a 100km ride, forgot to start Strava....I'm out!!
Just knocked off a 100km ride, forgot to start Strava….I’m out!!
I would be sitting in a corner crying if that happened.
When I did my Everesting, I used 2 Garmins. One died at about the 8000m mark - completely just had a Garmin moment and crashed. The remaining one was beeping low battery at me for the entire final ascent. I would have had a total meltdown if that had gone too.
Very enjoyable brisk walk up to the snowline and back, no chance I was braving the ice today.
Slim chances of doing 500km now reduced to 'vanishingly' but at least now I won't feel bad for some footery slow CX efforts later in the week. If I can scrape another 99km I'll hit 5000km for the year
A small family issue has just arisen meaning I won't have enough free days to get to 500, started pretty badly anyway so just going to see how far into it I can get now. Did have a day set aside to spend ticking off some Zwift routes but that's now completely scuppered, aiming for 250km now and use that as a springboard for the New Year.
I would be sitting in a corner crying if that happened.
It was a bloody lovely day and I had a really nice ride, Rapha is shite anyway!!!
Another 65km today so up to 200km in total.
More of those horrible flies and nasty headwind for the second part of the ride.
No further otter sightings in the 5 valleys today.
Anyway, I saw a wild otter
What was he upset about?
What was he upset about?
Wild? He was absolutely livid!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one referencing Not The Nine O'Clock News on reading that!
Having started the thread, did my first 12 miles this afternoon.....🤷♂️
Lovely day today, but with the FIL in hospital. My cough has finally stopped so may get some rides in later this week after a trip to see my family. Or I could sew the FF500 patches onto my Rapha FF500 jersey finally instead!
Sheffield to Strensham Service today, 195km. Nearly cut short after I decked it on black ice in Belper but thought I'd push on. 288km total now which is good, but I've probably ruined myself for the next couple of days at least.
Just as I was ticking over 200k I hit a slick of diesel and oil on a roundabout whilst doing about 50k with a tailwind. Both wheels out in an instant.
RIP my new alpha light jacket, bib tights, shoe covers, shoes, and half the skin on my right side. Went at least 100m until I hit a kerb and got thrown into a lamppost.
A sore limp back for the next 40k home.
Looks like I'll only be able to complete it indoors now, as I've snapped the rear mech hanger and angle grinded the mech.
Oooof, nasty - get well soon.
Being able to limp home sounds like a good result, considering. Heal well.
Having started the thread, did my first 12 miles this afternoon…..🤷♂️
This post needs more appreciation 😂 (12 miles more than me though 😉)
This post needs more appreciation 😂 (12 miles more than me though 😉)
Thank you, thank you. It was very close to the least I could do.
Just knocked off a 100km ride, forgot to start Strava….I’m out!!
No you're not, you either do 500km or you don't. Whether it's on Strava or not is irrelevant.
200km in, trying a consistent approach this year, getting up at 6 and doing 60 each day. Mix of in and out, mainly in.
Struggling this morning but I guess that's why they call it a challenge.
🙂
Managed 71km in the sunshine yesterday and then another 35km inside yesterday evening. Puts me at 215km so far. Hunger woke me up at 6am this morning!
Another 80 done this morning puts me at 300 with 4 days left.
Not riding today. Took the dogs for a long walk. Heading back to mine tonight so that'll leave 300km in 4 days which should be doable.🤞
300km, might take a day off tomorrow and then do 100,50,50 over the last three days. Feeling pretty tired and finding it hard trying to do it all outdoors with not enough / too many clothes on and battling through the thick wintery air. Managed my first single speed gravel century (metric) on Xmas eve so if I don’t make it to 500km that’s my consolation prize.
Managed my first single speed gravel century (metric)
Respect! Have just stuck some new tyres on my singlespeed CX bike, tempted to take it out and see what it can do.
What ratio for singlespeed gravel?
I run 38/17 on my salsa stormchaser. Bloody love it!
No you’re not, you either do 500km or you don’t. Whether it’s on Strava or not is irrelevant.
Tbh I didn't want to do 500km anyway!!
It is a real chore trying to get it in without disturbing family life. I was out at 05:00 this morning. Also, I’m trying not to do junk miles, so am trying to do climbing on some days and more distance on others and always a different route. As someone said above - I guess that’s why it’s a challenge.
Nasty weather today. Snow, rain and wind.
Came off on some ice this afternoon, both wheels, bang, ****!, then lay in a puddle for a bit. Holes in my elbow and knee but none in my kit thankfully 🙃
Big increase in people driving like weapons grade Piers Morgans today. Nearly taken out by one car giving me a close pass while another car tried to overtake the first one.
Managed 60km to keep on target. 250km to go with 4 days to go.
Well done all! I'm out.. snow and icey roads in Scotlandshire means it's just not worth the risk. I mean you don't even get a patch!
I've done it a few times so no big deal. It really is a challenge in this part of the world to do it. As mentioned before folk doing it in double digits isn't really cricket.
I don't have a turbo and even if I did there's no chance Id be doing this on it.
I might make 500 calories by NYE...
Only 56km for me today. Soaked to the skin within 25mins of being out and a howling wind. Cycling up a 15% hill, soaking wet, into a headwind, in the dark after 50km made me turn toward the house rather than extend as intended.
Well played Daffy (didn’t you buy my tripster off me a few years back?!). Kudos for getting out. I took one look at the weather and thought, nah. Did a couple of hours on the turbo instead so I’ve DQd myself. New target is 450km outdoors.
Constant rain here now. I'm back at my own house after Christmas at my sister's so I'm much more free to ride whenever but riding in this is going to be grim. It's not pouring down but it's just that steady rain that'll soak through everything.
If it dries up later I might try for a short night ride and then see if I can do 300km in 3 days... Leaves me no leeway at all!
Got out for 75km early afternoon in what I thought was the weather clearing up but it turned out to be a break in the showers and from then on the ride was rain, clear, rain, clear, rain, dark.
Also, turns out that after several days of lovely riding in the lanes of Yorkshire with near zero traffic and no traffic lights, riding into the centre of Manchester is quite a shock to the system!
280km done, 220 to go...
Another 60km in the hail/rain and wind this morning. 410km done - 90km to go.
After this mornings commute, 154 to go. Should get that done tonight on the way home and tomorrow. After that no chance as I'll be stood in a field marshalling a CX race in Cheshire! 😀 That wind heading towards the cost this morning though ><
Just went out for a short spin with some mates and found my phone had recorded my ride on boxing day, plus everything since including driving my mum home, so that's the festive 500 done, where do I claim my badge 🤪🤪🤪🤪
hat wind heading towards the cost this morning though ><
I really suffered in the wind on a ride in Yorkshire a few days ago so today I cheated - got the train out to Chester and rode home, specifically to have a tailwind for as much of the route as possible. Still wasn't perfect by any means - any hint of S or W on the compass and the wind was right against me again. Anyway, that's another 104km done, takes me to 385km total.
I reckon I've got one 115km ride in me for NYE. The weather tomorrow looks terrible. And that wind is *really* annoying.
Another 51km in the wind and rain for me this afternoon. My wife agreed to hold the fort as it might allow me to get it done tomorrow before breakfast thus freeing up all of Friday and Saturday. 460km done and 40km to go.
@curto80 - yes, that was me.
I’ve managed 150km so far which is more than I thought I would. All on Zwift barring 60km outside today.
Will be Zwifting tomorrow and Saturday so should crack 200km and will aim for 250.
Second ride of the week today. 172km meaning that I’ve got to do another 165km to finish the challenge tomorrow. (Family duties on NYE) Only trouble is the Christmas whiskey is going down nice atm 😬
A flat tubeless tyre that wouldn't re-seat yesterday has put me behind. By the time I had fixed it I'd lost the motivation to go out.
I have 187km left to do and two days of nasty weather to do it in.
High wind and rain forecast for tomorrow and a big ride to do.
@bjj.andy.w if I see you out tomorrrow morning you can tag along 😛
@Phil-H
You're so close 8 hours and it's done!👍🤸🤞
Festive 500 DONE! 503km, 19.05h, average speed 26.5kph. All outdoors with a mix of road and gravel.
Celebrating with a coffee and a pop tart.
Well done sir, very well played. 👏
Well done everyone completing, not been an easy year by the sound of it, if there even is such a thing 👏
That's me done too. 7 days, 7 rides for a total of 510km in 18hrs at an average of 28kmh, all outside. Today's was the hardest, strong winds blowing up the Severn Vale. Well done everyone who gave it a go.
Nice one Daffy and neila!
I hadn't planned on riding today, especially given the wind howling last night but actually the roads were dry and I fancied a coffee so I rode out to a local cafe. Then went to a second cafe for lunch. However it turned out to be 40km so that leaves me with a nicely manageable 71km to go tomorrow. It's a lot more positive sounding than 115km!
Normally I like to do the final day in the Lake District but I'm not driving a 200 mile round trip in this wind just to do my favourite route. Something local, 80km will do nicely.
115km done today. Very nearly sacked it off but glad I didn't. Set off in the hissing rain expecting it to be like that all day, sky cleared after about an hour and the rain stayed off for the remainder of the ride. The forecasted wind stayed away for most of the ride too.
72km to do tomorrow & the weather forecast looks much better.
Managed to get a few short rides in today so only 16km needed in the morning and I can call it (sort of*) done.
* Sort of cheated a bit by jumping on Zwift for about 100km of it. Having to get rescued from the South Downs cos of a massive side wall gash sort of stole my momentum outside
Riding buddy of mine did the complete 500km in one shot. Bristol to Cbridge and back, bloody nutter
Wow... I bet the “and back” hurt.
I’ve always wanted to do the Full Fat Festive 500 (the all in one go 500) but never managed to get it all lined up.
Gentle 20km on the stormchaser this morning to get it finished. Amazing how muddy you can get in an hour.
380km outdoors and 120km inside. Meh that’ll do.
I’ve always wanted to do the Full Fat Festive 500 (the all in one go 500) but never managed to get it all lined up.
Same here. I actually asked Rapha if I could join their group ride around Herne Hill Velodrome (it's become a bit of A Thing now, this is the third year they've done it) but they said they'd already got 10 riders. That's the track limit for insane stuff like riding when shattered for 20+hrs through the night in potentially shit weather!
Anyway, I've just finished mine with a nice 55 miles. Was pouring this morning but it has stopped by the time I set off although the roads were soaking. Got slightly showered on a couple of times, the coffee stop I'd planned on wasn't open so I had to resort to a Costa a bit further on but it was bang on 4hrs (inc the coffee stop) and actually most of the ride was quite peaceful, I seem to have chosen some quiet roads and early enough to avoid the rush.
518km, 7 rides.
Congratulations everyone!
fail from me. managed 350km.
4 days touring in the dales in the rain has killed my enthusiasm for a ride today.
well done all.
First post from a long term forum lurker.
Festive 500 complete.
514 km over 6 rides. All outdoor, hit the deck on a patch of ice on Christmas Eve and then snapped a gear cable on day 3 or 4. I quite enjoyed it overall. First time I've attempted it, normally too busy but everything fell into place this year.
Well done to all the "Outsiders!". I completed it this morning but all indoors unfortunately, so not quite an achievement. I started late so did 500 in 5 days. Got caught up on a lot of TV though!! Next year I'd like to try it all outside but Scottish weather isn't conducive to that!!
Managed to complete it yesterday with another 100 + mile ride so like my previous years I did the challenge in three rides. (Well, apart from one year when I did it in two)
24th 103 fasted miles on the TT bike
29th 107 fasted miles on the roadbike
30th 105 miles on the roadbike. Tried to do this fasted again but 80miles in I was a broken man and had to take on a couple of granola bars 😂
Done the challenge for a few years now and this was by far the hardest. Normally you get at least a couple of rides in with half decent weather but in Lancashire it never turned up.
Completed the last 75km today. Completed in 7 rides, all outdoors in varying conditions.
I was denied my egg & tattie scone roll at the Tay Bridge Kiosk though, they'd run out of rolls😱
