I'm getting a pronounced knocking noise from my Fox DHX3 air shock on compression, there's also quite a bit of oil (though not a massive amount) coming out onto the shaft.
Anyone know what might be wrong with it?

Open it up and have a look.

Its really not that difficult to remove an air sleeve, just make sure you release all the air first!

I'm going to, just thought I might be able to get some wild conjecture from STW as to what it is

work is slow today with no-one here

Sounds like air the wrong side of the seal

shouldn't there be air on both sides of the seal?

I know it's not the bushings or any part of the linkages (or the headset or the BB or the seatpost or the tyres), it's definitely the shock

Probably a daft question, but it's not the bushings is it?

Need a bit more info but sounds like you have lost oil from the damper. take off the air can and pull the dmper back and forward, should all run smooth.
