Hi,

I am looking at a fatbike with the intention of converting it to drop bars.

The particular bike I'm considering is for sale locally.  I'm normally a large frame but this one is two sizes smaller.

Screenshot_20230909_214719_Chrome The geometry of the fatbike (black, right) looks very similar to my drop bar 29er (white, left) - to me atleast.  I'll admit I'm no expert.

Am I missing something?  Two sizes does seem like quite a drop.

Maybe have a look at some Surly Corner Bars? Would make the conversion process a whole lot easier.

@matt_outandabout

I'm not sure what the question is?  The drop bar 29er is 2019, the fatbike is 2016.

@tuboflard

I have most of what I need in my parts box so very little cost implication.

The fatbike is carbon framed.  Would the sestpost length become an issue?

The seatpost shouldn’t be a problem provided you can find one long enough and that it is fitted beyond the minimum insertion line and that you aren’t over the weight limit for the frame.

Other considerations are that the BB appears to be raised a touch and that the contact patch for the front tyre is further forward, which will impact on how the bike handles and feels, possibly speeding up handling. There are sometimes things you notice on first rides, but become less noticeable once you get used to it.

Weight limit for a frame hadn't even occurred to me 🫣

Fat bike for fat people, no?

I'm 94kg...  should I worry?

Many bike frames are designed for 100kg rider limit, so you should be OK, but fully extended seatposts can put a lot of stress on the frame seat collar so maybe take it easy on the downhills

Anybody have an opinion on the sizing being close enough to expect a similar fit?
